Wikipedia and Wikidata Strategy
Wikipedia = top authority signal. Requires: notability, references, neutral tone. Most brands not eligible until later-stage.
Wikipedia notability criteria
Wikipedia notability requires:
- Significant coverage in independent reliable sources
- Multiple sources (not just one)
- Reliable sources (newspapers, books, peer-reviewed)
- Independent (not from brand itself)
- Verifiable (anyone can check the sources)
New startups: usually fail. Established brands with press coverage: eligible.
Wikidata first (easier)
Wikidata = Wikipedia's structured data (different from Wikipedia article). Easier inclusion:
- Create Wikidata account
- Add entry: business name, type, founded, location, etc.
- Reference: official site, press mentions
- Maintain over time
Wikidata feeds Knowledge Graph + AI.
Path to Wikipedia article
- Earn press coverage (2-3+ major outlets)
- Get cited in industry publications
- Earn awards or recognitions
- Reach customer milestone (e.g., 100K users)
- Hire experienced Wikipedia editor (controversial — write article in own voice)
- Better: rely on community to write organically based on press
