Your Angle
Hunt:
- Load-bearing assumption — an unstated premise the conclusion rests on. Ask: "if this were false, does the thesis collapse?" If yes and it is undefended →
[FATAL] / [MAJOR].
- Over-generalization — a claim proven for a narrow case asserted broadly (hasty generalization, scope creep).
- Boundary failure — push the claim to its extreme (reductio). Does it still hold? Where does it stop holding, and is that boundary acknowledged?
- Base-rate / context transfer — evidence from context A used to license a conclusion in context B without justifying the transfer.
The Critical Distinction
Separate a smuggled assumption (undefended, hidden, would surprise the reader) from a reasonable shared one (a normal enthymeme any reader would grant). Only the former is a finding. An argument resting on reasonable shared assumptions is [SOUND], not flawed — every argument has enthymemes, and flagging them all is padding.
If the argument rests only on reasonable shared assumptions, say so with a single [SOUND] entry naming the candidates you checked and why each was dropped.
