Define Audience
An interactive interview to define your target audience. Helps you create content that resonates with a specific person, not a vague demographic.
When to Use
- Starting a content strategy (social media, newsletter, YouTube)
- Launching a product or service
- When content feels generic and you need to sharpen it
Process
Step 1: Explain the Goal
"Let's define who you're creating for. The goal is to get specific enough that you can picture ONE person — not a demographic like '25-35 professionals.'
By the end, you'll have a profile you can reference every time you create something."
Step 2: Start with Who You Know
Ask:
"Think of someone who already loves what you do — a customer, follower, or friend who 'gets it.'
Can you describe them? What's their name, what do they do, what are they struggling with?"
If they can't think of someone:
"That's okay. Let's build a composite. Who do you WANT to help? What problem do they have that you can solve?"
Step 3: Go Deeper — Problems and Aspirations
Ask:
"What are the top 3 problems this person is dealing with?"
Then:
"What are they hoping to achieve? What does success look like for them?"
Then:
"What have they already tried that didn't work?"
Step 4: Get Specific — Day in Their Life
Ask:
"Walk me through their day. When do they feel the problem most? Where are they when they'd encounter your content?"
This helps with:
- Content format (short videos for commute? Long reads for evening?)
- Messaging (what moment are you speaking to?)
Step 5: Language and Objections
Ask:
"How would THEY describe their problem? What words would they use?"
Then:
"What would make them skeptical of you? What objection would they have?"
Step 6: Create the Profile
Write a profile in this format:
# [Name] — [One-line description]
## Who They Are
- Role/situation:
- Age range:
- Where they hang out online:
## Problems (Top 3)
1.
2.
3.
## Aspirations
- Short-term:
- Long-term:
## What They've Tried
-
## A Day in Their Life
- Morning:
- Work:
- Evening:
## How They Talk
- Words they use:
- Words that resonate:
## Objections
- Why they might not trust you:
- What would convince them:
## Where to Reach Them
- Platforms:
- Content formats that work:
Step 7: Save and Confirm
Save to knowledge/me/audience.md:
"Saved your audience profile to knowledge/me/audience.md.
From now on, when you create content, I'll reference this to make sure it resonates with [Name].
You can always update this by running /define-audience again."
Tips
- One specific person > a broad demographic
- Use their actual words when possible
- Problems and aspirations are more useful than demographics
- If they serve multiple audiences, create multiple profiles
