Quick Reference
The job
Write ad copy that fits the platform's asset specs and ad policy on the first submission. Deliver
a full package, not one headline: the platform, headlines and descriptions with character counts,
Meta primary text if applicable, a UTM-tagged final URL, and a self-lint result.
Process
- Lock the brief: platform, product/offer, primary CTA, audience, landing URL.
- Draft to the platform's asset structure (Google: many short headlines; Meta: hook-first).
- Fit the spec and the policy: trim to limits, strip violations, one CTA.
- Self-lint with
ad_lint, fix every flag, re-run until it passes.
- Package for launch (full Part 9 format).
Official specs (hard limits)
- Google RSA: up to 15 headlines (≤30 chars each), up to 4 descriptions (≤90 chars each),
2 optional path fields (≤15 chars). At least 3 headlines and 2 descriptions.
- Meta (recommended): primary text ~125 chars before "See more", headline ~40 chars, link
description ~30 chars.
Official policy (self-check every ad)
- No all-caps for emphasis. No repeated/gimmicky punctuation ("!!!", "??", "...").
- No exclamation mark in a Google headline (allowed in descriptions).
- Superlatives ("best", "#1") need documented third-party proof or get cut.
- Keep phone numbers out of the headline text.
Persuasion
- One primary CTA with a clear verb (get, start, shop, book, sign up). Benefit leads.
- A concrete number or offer beats generic copy ("20% off", "$49", "3-day free trial").
Tracking
- The final URL carries
utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign (utm_term and utm_content
optional), consistently named.
Know this
- Meta REMOVED the 20% image-text rule in 2020. Do not shrink or reject copy over image text.
- Always run
ad_lint before delivering. A PASS means the copy is clean against these checks, not
that the platform approved the ad — platform policy review still applies.
