# MfcSquad A specialized team of AI agents for MFC/Win32/C++ legacy codebase modernization, built with [Squad](https://github.com/bradygaster/squad). MfcSquad is purpose-built to analyze and plan modernization strategies for legacy C++/MFC applications. Born from analyzing the [WinMerge](https://github.com/WinMerge/winmerge) codebase — a 400K+ LOC production C++ application — this squad has deep, earned knowledge of MFC patterns, Win32 APIs, COM plugin systems, MSBuild, and modernization paths. ## Agent Roster | Name | Role | Focus | |------|------|-------| | **Picard** | Lead / Architect | System architecture, modernization roadmaps, cross-subsystem synthesis | | **Data** | Backend / Systems Analyst | C++ engine analysis, COM/plugin architectures, file I/O, dependency mapping | | **LaForge** | Frontend / UI Analyst | MFC dialogs, views, menus, MDI framework, UI modernization paths | | **Worf** | DevOps / Build Analyst | MSBuild, .sln files, CI/CD, InnoSetup/NSIS, dependency management | | **Riker** | Reviewer / QA | Analysis validation, risk assessment, cross-subsystem consistency | | **Scribe** | Session Logger | Decisions, orchestration, cross-agent context | | **Ralph** | Work Monitor | Queue management, backlog tracking | ## Quick Start ```bash # Clone this squad into your MFC project git clone https://github.com/bradygaster/MfcSquad.git cd MfcSquad # Or copy the .squad/ and .copilot/ directories into your existing project cp -r MfcSquad/.squad/ your-mfc-project/.squad/ cp -r MfcSquad/.copilot/ your-mfc-project/.copilot/ ``` ### Installing Squad This squad requires [Squad](https://github.com/bradygaster/squad) to be installed. See the [Squad README](https://github.com/bradygaster/squad#quick-start) for installation instructions. Once Squad is installed, you can interact with the team: ```bash # Start a session squad run # Route work to the team "Picard, analyze the architecture of our MFC application" "Data, map the diff engine dependencies" "LaForge, assess the UI modernization options" ``` ## What This Squad Knows This team has deep, earned knowledge from analyzing real MFC codebases: ### Architecture Analysis - MFC MDI Doc/View architecture patterns and modernization strategies - Document/View separation assessment — how well does your app separate UI from logic? - CrystalEdit-style deep inheritance chains and replacement strategies ### C++ Engine Analysis - GNU diffutils integration patterns and custom algorithm adaptation - Thread-local storage for thread safety in legacy C code - API surface mapping — identifying coupling between subsystems - COM/OLE Automation plugin architectures (IDispatch, per-thread instances) ### UI Modernization - MFC → WinUI 3 migration paths (incremental XAML Islands approach) - GDI/GDI+ usage analysis and modernization - Dialog/view class hierarchy mapping - Complexity scoring for UI modernization effort ### Build System Analysis - MSBuild/.sln project structure analysis - Multi-platform build configurations (x86/x64/ARM/ARM64) - CI/CD pipeline assessment and modernization - Installer analysis (InnoSetup, NSIS, WiX) - Dependency management strategies (submodules, vendored, vcpkg migration) ### Modernization Strategy - Phased modernization roadmaps (quick wins → encapsulation → infrastructure → UI → big bets) - Risk scoring per subsystem - Dependency prioritization — what to modernize first without breaking everything - Poco → C++17 standard library migration patterns ## Key References - [WinMerge](https://github.com/WinMerge/winmerge) — The MFC application this squad learned from - [Squad](https://github.com/bradygaster/squad) — The AI agent team framework - [C++ Core Guidelines](https://isocpp.github.io/CppCoreGuidelines/) — Modern C++ best practices - [WinUI 3](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/winui/winui3/) — Microsoft's modern native UI framework ## Conventions - **Analysis-first:** Understand the full codebase before recommending changes - **Phased modernization:** Never recommend big-bang rewrites — incremental is the path - **Evidence-based:** Every recommendation needs LOC counts, coupling metrics, and risk scores - **Risk-scored:** Every modernization candidate gets a risk assessment before proceeding - **Selective modernization:** Not everything needs modernizing — identify what's already well-architected ## Contributing New analyses should start with Picard for architecture review, then route to specialists (Data for engine/plugin analysis, LaForge for UI, Worf for build systems, Riker for quality gates). --- Built with [Squad](https://github.com/bradygaster/squad) — AI agent teams for any project.
