Prompt Design
Use when an AI feature's behavior depends materially on instructions, context construction, examples, or prompt-level policy.
Procedure
- Define the task contract before writing prose: intended user/task distribution, required behavior, forbidden behavior, available tools/data, output contract, and what should happen when information is missing or ambiguous.
- Separate instruction layers deliberately. Put durable behavior and authority at the appropriate higher-priority layer; keep task input, retrieved content, documents, webpages, and tool results clearly identifiable as data rather than trusted instructions.
- Write instructions around observable decisions and outputs. Prefer concrete requirements, decision rules, and completion criteria over personality adjectives or vague appeals to "be smart" or "be careful."
- Provide only the context needed for the task. Preserve provenance and delimit untrusted material so content inside a document or retrieval result cannot silently redefine the agent's job.
- Use examples when they clarify format, edge cases, or judgment boundaries. Make examples representative rather than repetitive, and avoid teaching accidental patterns that conflict with the written contract.
- Define ambiguity behavior. State what the model may infer, when it should ask for clarification, when it should use tools or retrieval, and when it should report uncertainty instead of fabricating an answer.
- Keep output requirements aligned with the consuming system. Use a structured-output contract when downstream code depends on exact fields; use natural language when rigid structure adds no value.
- Version prompts and meaningful surrounding context together. Record the model/configuration and prompt revision used in evaluations so a behavior change can be reproduced.
- Evaluate changes on representative cases before adopting them. Inspect individual regressions and failure categories rather than accepting a prompt because a few examples look better.
- Simplify after improvement. Remove instructions that are redundant, contradicted, untested, or compensating for a failure better fixed in retrieval, tools, product logic, or model choice.
Decision rules
- Prompting is one layer of the system, not the universal place to repair architecture or product problems.
- Treat external text as untrusted data even when it is retrieved from a useful source.
- Do not hide essential business rules solely in examples.
- Prefer measurable instructions over ritual phrases, magic wording, or unsupported prompt folklore.
- A prompt change is complete only when the evaluation evidence travels with it.
Quality gate
The prompt is ready when its task and authority boundaries are explicit, untrusted context cannot casually override them, ambiguity and output behavior are defined, the prompt is reproducibly versioned, and evaluation evidence shows the intended improvement without unacceptable regressions.
