Goal โ Scope the Research Before Collecting Data
Market research without a named decision produces a report nobody acts on.
Every engagement starts here, before analyze touches a single source.
Process
- Name the decision this research must inform. Not "understand the
market" โ a decision: enter/don't enter, price at X or Y, build vs.
partner, which segment first. If no decision is named, ask for one.
- Define the market boundary. Geography, customer segment, product
category, price band. "The market" without a boundary can't be sized.
- Name 3โ5 competitors or alternatives the user already suspects matter
โ including "do nothing" / status quo as a baseline competitor.
- State the horizon. Is this a 30-day GTM plan, a 12-month market entry
case, or a one-time competitive snapshot? This bounds how much evidence is
enough.
- Define "done." What artifact ends this engagement โ a comparison
matrix, a GTM document, both? What decision gets unblocked when it's
delivered?
Write the scope to research/SCOPE.md:
---
decision: {the decision this research serves}
market: {boundary: geography / segment / category / price band}
horizon: {timeframe this research covers}
created: {ISO-8601}
---
# Research Scope
## Decision to inform
{one sentence}
## Market boundary
- Geography: {...}
- Segment: {...}
- Category: {...}
## Known competitors / alternatives (starting list)
1. {competitor} โ {why it matters}
2. ...
3. "Do nothing" โ the customer's current workaround
## Horizon
{timeframe}
## Definition of done
{artifact(s) + decision unblocked}
Anti-Rationalization
- "Let's just see what's out there" is not a scope โ it produces an
unbounded literature review. Force a decision.
- A market boundary that includes "everyone" is not a boundary.
- Skipping the competitor seed list means
analyze starts from zero and
wastes a round on obvious names.
Evidence
Scope is complete when: a decision is named, the market boundary has at
least geography + segment, โฅ3 competitors/alternatives are seeded, and the
output artifact is named.
Red Flags
- "We'll figure out what we need once we see the data."
- No named decision โ this is exploration, not GTM research; say so
explicitly and set expectations accordingly.
- Competitor list of 1 (nothing to compare against).
