Story Mapping Process

1. Identify personas: Who are the users?
2. Map activities: What high-level things do they do? (left to right = narrative flow)
3. Break into tasks: What steps comprise each activity? (top to bottom = detail)
4. Slice releases: Draw horizontal lines to define the walking skeleton and subsequent releases
5. Validate: Walk through the map with stakeholders narrating the user journey

NFR Examples with Measurability

Bad: "The system should be fast." Good: "The search results page shall load within 2 seconds for the 95th percentile of requests under normal load (1000 concurrent users)."

Bad: "The system should be available." Good: "The system shall maintain 99.9% uptime measured monthly, excluding scheduled maintenance windows (max 4 hours per month, announced 48 hours in advance)."

Bad: "The system should be secure." Good: "All API endpoints shall require OAuth 2.0 bearer tokens. Tokens shall expire after 1 hour. Refresh tokens shall expire after 30 days. All data in transit shall use TLS 1.2 or higher."

MoSCoW Prioritization

The Framework

• Must Have: Non-negotiable. Without these, the release is a failure. Typically 60% of effort.
• Should Have: Important but not critical. The solution works without these but is significantly diminished. Typically 20% of effort.
• Could Have: Nice to have. Include if time and budget permit. Typically 20% of effort.
• Won't Have (this time): Explicitly out of scope. Documented to prevent scope creep and set expectations.

Prioritization Workshop Format

1. Present all requirements with brief descriptions
2. Start with "Must Have" - challenge each one:
   "What happens if we don't deliver this? Can we launch without it?"
3. Move clearly non-essential items to Should/Could
4. Validate Must Haves are ≤60% of available capacity
5. Rank Should Haves by business value
6. Document Won't Haves with rationale
7. Get stakeholder sign-off on the classification

Priority Challenge Questions

Traceability Benefits

• Forward Traceability: Requirement → Implementation (ensures all requirements are built)
• Backward Traceability: Implementation → Requirement (ensures nothing is built without a requirement)
• Impact Analysis: When a requirement changes, trace to find all affected artifacts
• Coverage Analysis: Identify requirements without test cases

Maintaining Traceability

• Update the matrix when requirements change (assign ownership)
• Review traceability during sprint planning and sprint review
