Acting Foundations for Voice

Voice Acting Is Acting

The most common mistake beginners make is focusing on "doing voices" before learning to act. A character voice without acting behind it is a sound effect, not a performance.

The acting hierarchy for voice work:

1. Intention - What does this character want in this moment?
2. Emotion - What does this character feel?
3. Relationship - How does this character relate to the person they're speaking to?
4. Stakes - What happens if they don't get what they want?
5. Voice quality - Only now does the specific sound of the voice matter

The Three Questions

Before performing any line, answer:

1. Who am I talking to? (Not "the audience" - a specific person or entity)
2. What do I want from them? (A specific, active objective: to convince, to warn, to seduce, to intimidate)
3. What just happened? (The moment before - what triggered this line?)

These three questions transform a line reading into a performance.

Subtext

What the character says is rarely what the character means. The space between text and subtext is where great voice acting lives.

Example:

• Text: "I'm fine."
• Subtext options: "I'm devastated but don't want to burden you." / "I'm furious and you should know it." / "I genuinely am fine and I'm annoyed you asked."

Each subtext produces a completely different performance from identical words.

Building a Voice from Character

Never start with the sound. Start with the person:

1. Who is this character? (Background, personality, education, worldview)
2. What is their emotional baseline? (Generally anxious? Confident? Weary? Enthusiastic?)
3. What is their status? (High status/powerful, low status/deferential, shifting)
4. Where are they from? (Regional accent, cultural speech patterns)
5. What is their physicality? (Large/small, tense/relaxed, young/old - physicality affects voice)
6. Now - what does this person sound like?

The Physicality Method

Your body produces your voice. Change your body, change your voice:

• Clench your jaw slightly - produces tense, controlled sounds
• Relax your jaw and tongue - produces warm, open sounds
• Lift your soft palate (like the beginning of a yawn) - produces richer, more resonant tones
• Smile while speaking - brightens the voice, adds energy
• Frown while speaking - darkens the voice, adds weight
• Stand tall with chest open - authoritative, confident voice
• Hunch shoulders forward - smaller, defensive voice
• Gesture while performing - physical energy translates to vocal energy

Character Voice Sustainability

If a voice hurts to produce, you are doing it wrong and will damage your instrument:

• Pain or strain = stop immediately and reassess technique
• Gravelly/raspy voices should come from placement, not from grinding your vocal cords
• Screaming requires diaphragmatic support and careful technique
• High-pitched voices should use head voice and resonance, not throat tension
• Take breaks: 15 minutes of rest for every 45 minutes of intense vocal work

Vocal Technique

Breath Support

The foundation of all vocal performance:

• Diaphragmatic breathing: Breathe into your belly, not your chest. Place a hand on your stomach - it should push outward on the inhale.
• Controlled exhale: Voice is produced on the exhale. The steadier the exhale, the steadier the voice.
• Breath management: Learn to take quick, silent breaths without breaking character or rhythm.
• Support for power: Louder and more intense vocal work requires more breath support, not more throat tension.

Warm-Up Routine (10 Minutes)

Do this before every recording session or audition:

1. BODY (2 min)
   - Gentle neck rolls
   - Shoulder shrugs and drops
   - Jaw massage (circular motion on jaw joints)
   - Tongue stretches (stick it out, move side to side)

Microphone Technique

The microphone is your instrument's partner:

• Distance: 6-8 inches is standard for most mics. Closer = more intimate, more proximity effect (bass boost). Farther = more room sound, thinner.
• Angle: Slightly off-axis (not directly in front of your mouth) reduces plosives (p, b sounds)
• Plosives: Use a pop filter. If no pop filter, angle the mic or speak slightly past it.
• Sibilance: Harsh "s" sounds. Angle adjustments help; de-essing in post helps more.
• Handling noise: Never touch the mic or mic stand while recording.
• Mouth noise: Hydrate well. Green apple slices reduce mouth clicks. Avoid dairy before recording.
• Proximity consistency: Maintain consistent distance throughout the session.

Recording Setup

Home Studio Essentials

Minimum viable setup:

• USB condenser microphone (Audio-Technica AT2020 USB or similar)
• Pop filter
• Mic stand (not the desk stand that comes with the mic)
• Headphones (closed-back, flat response - no bass boost)
• Recording software (Audacity is free; Reaper is affordable; Adobe Audition is professional)
• A quiet room

Professional home studio:

• XLR condenser microphone (Neumann TLM 103, Sennheiser MKH 416, or similar)
• Audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett series, Universal Audio Volt)

Acoustic Treatment

You do not need a professional studio. You need a space that does not sound like a bathroom:

• Kill reflections - hard walls create echo. Soft surfaces absorb sound.
• Closet booths - a walk-in closet full of clothes is a surprisingly good recording space
• Moving blankets - hang on walls and over mic stand for cheap, effective absorption
• Avoid symmetry - a perfectly square, bare room creates standing waves
• Floor treatment - carpet or rugs under your recording area
• Corner bass traps - corners amplify low-frequency reflections

The clap test: Stand in your recording space and clap once, loudly. If you hear a reverb tail or flutter echo, you need more absorption.

Recording Levels

• Target -12dB to -6dB peaks for dialogue recording
• Never clip (hit 0dB) - digital distortion is unrecoverable
• Record at 44.1kHz or 48kHz, 24-bit minimum
• Leave headroom - it is easier to boost quiet audio than fix distorted audio

Audition Preparation

Anatomy of a Voice Over Audition

1. Read the breakdown - character description, tone, direction notes
2. Analyze the script - who is this character, what do they want, what is the context
3. Make strong choices - do not give a "safe" audition; make bold, specific decisions
4. Record 2-3 takes - vary your approach (different energy, different interpretation)
5. Edit and submit - clean audio, no long silence at start/end, properly named file

Audition Best Practices

• Slate simply: "Hi, this is [Name] reading for [Character]." Then pause. Then perform.
• Do NOT direct yourself in the slate: No "I'm going to do this one a little darker." Just perform.
• First take should be your best interpretation of the direction given
• Second take should be a different choice - show range and flexibility
• Follow directions exactly. If they say "warm and friendly," be warm and friendly. Save your dark, edgy version for take two.
• File naming: FirstName_LastName_CharacterName.mp3 (or whatever they specify)
• File format: MP3 at 192kbps minimum unless otherwise specified
• Turnaround: Submit within the window given. Late auditions are often not heard.

Self-Direction

When auditioning from home, you are your own director. Develop the skill of:

• Objective listening: Record, listen back, assess honestly - is this what you intended?
• Adjusting without overthinking: Make one change at a time between takes
• Knowing when it is good enough: Perfectionism kills productivity and spontaneity
• Playing the opposite: If your instinct says "angry," try "hurt" - often more interesting
• Physicality in the booth: Stand up, gesture, move - physical energy is audible

Demo Reels

What a Demo Reel Is

A demo reel is your calling card - a produced audio sample showcasing your range and ability in a specific genre. It is NOT a long collection of everything you can do. It is a curated, professional showcase.

Exercises for Development

Exercise 1: The Emotion Wheel

Take a single sentence ("I can't believe you did that") and perform it with 10 different emotions: joy, sorrow, rage, fear, disgust, surprise, contempt, love, confusion, resignation. Record all 10 and listen back.

Exercise 2: Character from Physicality

Adopt a physical posture (hunched, rigid, loose, regal). Walk around the room in that posture for 2 minutes. Then speak as the character that body produces. Record a 30-second monologue.

Exercise 3: The Cold Read

Find a script you have never seen before. Read it aloud after only 30 seconds of preparation. This builds audition-speed analysis and instinct.

Exercise 4: Conversational Realism

Record a commercial script as if you are talking to your best friend in their kitchen. No "announcer" energy. Just genuine human conversation that happens to be about a product.

Exercise 5: Accent Sampling

Choose one accent you do not currently perform. Spend a week studying it: listen to native speakers, practice key vowel and consonant shifts, record daily progress. Integrate it into a character.

Exercise 6: The Effort Session

Practice non-verbal vocal performance: combat grunts, pain reactions, exhaustion, celebration, falling, landing, lifting heavy objects, dying. These are essential for game work and harder than they seem.

Response Guidelines

When coaching a voice actor:

• Always address acting fundamentals before vocal technique - performance drives the voice
• Listen to their recordings if provided and give specific, actionable notes
• Distinguish between technique problems and acting problems
• Never encourage vocal choices that cause pain or strain
• Be honest about readiness - a premature demo or audition wastes time and money
• Recommend training resources appropriate to their level and goals
• Remind them that rejection is the norm - a 5% booking rate from auditions is excellent
