The Classical Definition and Its Problems
THE TRADITIONAL ANALYSIS OF KNOWLEDGE

Since Plato (Theaetetus, ~369 BCE), knowledge has been defined as:
JUSTIFIED TRUE BELIEF (JTB)
You KNOW that P if and only if:
1. P is TRUE (the belief matches reality)
2. You BELIEVE that P (you accept it as true)
3. You are JUSTIFIED in believing P (you have good reasons)
Example:
"I know it is raining" requires:
1. It IS raining (truth)
2. I believe it is raining (belief)
3. I can see/hear/feel the rain (justification)
THE GETTIER PROBLEM (Edmund Gettier, 1963):
Gettier showed that justified true belief is NOT sufficient for knowledge.
GETTIER CASE:
Smith has strong evidence that Jones will get the job (the boss told him).
Smith also sees that Jones has 10 coins in his pocket.
Smith forms the belief: "The person who will get the job has 10 coins
in his pocket."
As it turns out, SMITH gets the job (not Jones), and by coincidence
SMITH also has 10 coins in his pocket.
Smith's belief is TRUE, JUSTIFIED, and he BELIEVES it.
But we would not say Smith KNOWS it -- he was just lucky.
This shows that JTB is necessary but not sufficient for knowledge.
Something MORE is needed. What is it?
POST-GETTIER RESPONSES:
- No false lemmas: Knowledge requires that justification not depend
on any false beliefs (but this may be too strict).
- Reliabilism: Knowledge requires that the belief was produced
by a reliable process (Alvin Goldman).
- Defeasibility: Knowledge requires that no additional true information
would undermine the justification (Keith Lehrer, Thomas Paxson).
- Tracking: Knowledge requires that you would not believe P if P were
false, and you would believe P if P were true (Robert Nozick).
- Virtue epistemology: Knowledge is true belief arising from
intellectual virtue (Ernest Sosa, Linda Zagzebski).
Theories of Justification
HOW ARE BELIEFS JUSTIFIED?
=============================
FOUNDATIONALISM:
Some beliefs are "basic" -- they are justified without needing
support from other beliefs (like direct perceptual experience).
All other justified beliefs rest on these basic beliefs.
Think of it as a building: foundations support everything above.
Classical foundationalism (Descartes): Only indubitable beliefs
are basic (very restrictive -- few beliefs qualify).
Modest foundationalism: Basic beliefs can be fallible but still
provide reasonable starting points.
Challenge: What makes a belief "basic"? Different foundationalists
disagree on this.
COHERENTISM:
No beliefs are basic. Justification comes from how well a belief
FITS with the rest of your belief system.
Think of it as a web: each strand supports and is supported by others.
Key thinker: Laurence BonJour
Strength: Avoids the problem of finding "basic" beliefs
Challenge: A perfectly coherent set of beliefs could be entirely
disconnected from reality (the "isolation problem").
INFINITISM:
Justification requires an infinite chain of reasons.
Each reason needs a further reason, forever.
Key thinker: Peter Klein
Challenge: Can humans actually have infinite chains of justification?
RELIABILISM:
A belief is justified if it was produced by a RELIABLE cognitive
process (like perception, memory, or sound reasoning).
Key thinker: Alvin Goldman
Strength: Connects justification to actual truth-tracking
Challenge: Which processes count as reliable? (The "generality problem")
VIRTUE EPISTEMOLOGY:
Knowledge arises from the exercise of intellectual virtues
(curiosity, open-mindedness, thoroughness, intellectual courage).
Key thinkers: Ernest Sosa, Linda Zagzebski
Strength: Connects knowing with the CHARACTER of the knower
Challenge: Can virtuous inquiry still lead to false beliefs?
Skeptical Challenges
THE PROBLEM OF SKEPTICISM
============================
Skepticism challenges whether knowledge is possible at all.
CARTESIAN SKEPTICISM (Rene Descartes, 1641):
In the Meditations, Descartes systematically doubted everything:
- Senses can deceive (optical illusions, dreams)
- You might be dreaming right now
- An evil demon might be feeding you false experiences
DESCARTES' SOLUTION: "I think, therefore I am" (cogito ergo sum)
The one thing you cannot doubt is that you are thinking.
From this foundation, Descartes rebuilt knowledge (controversially,
through a proof of God's existence as guarantor of our faculties).
EXTERNAL WORLD SKEPTICISM:
How do you know there is a world outside your mind?
All your evidence for the external world comes through your senses,
and your senses could be systematically deceived.
RESPONSES:
- Common sense realism (G.E. Moore): "Here is one hand, here is another."
Sometimes the evidence of our senses is more certain than any
philosophical argument against it.
- Pragmatist response: Skepticism makes no practical difference.
If we cannot distinguish reality from illusion, the distinction
is meaningless.
- Contextualism (David Lewis, Keith DeRose): Whether you "know"
depends on the context. In everyday contexts, ordinary evidence
suffices. Skeptical scenarios raise the bar artificially.
- Semantic externalism (Hilary Putnam): A brain in a vat cannot
meaningfully refer to "brains" or "vats" -- the skeptical
hypothesis is self-defeating.
INDUCTIVE SKEPTICISM (David Hume):
How do you know the future will resemble the past?
"The sun has risen every day" does not PROVE it will rise tomorrow.
All of science relies on induction, but induction cannot be
justified without circular reasoning.
RESPONSES:
- Inference to the best explanation: Induction works because the
world has regularities, and the best explanation of past patterns
continuing is that they will continue.
- Pragmatic justification: Induction is the best tool we have.
If it fails, nothing else would have worked either.
- Karl Popper: Science does not rely on induction but on
FALSIFICATION -- testing hypotheses by trying to disprove them.
Truth Theories
WHAT IS TRUTH?
================
CORRESPONDENCE THEORY:
A statement is true if it CORRESPONDS to the way things actually are.
"Snow is white" is true if and only if snow is white.
Key thinker: Aristotle, Bertrand Russell
Strength: Intuitive, matches common understanding
Challenge: What does "correspondence" actually mean? How do we
compare our beliefs to reality without another set of beliefs?
COHERENCE THEORY:
A statement is true if it COHERES with a system of other
accepted statements.
Key thinkers: F.H. Bradley, Brand Blanshard
Strength: Acknowledges that we test beliefs against other beliefs
Challenge: A coherent system could be entirely fictional.
PRAGMATIC THEORY:
A statement is true if it is USEFUL -- if it works in practice,
leads to successful predictions, and enables effective action.
Key thinkers: William James, Charles Sanders Peirce, John Dewey
Strength: Connects truth to real-world consequences
Challenge: Some truths may be useless; some useful beliefs may be false.
DEFLATIONARY THEORY:
"True" is not a substantive property. To say "'P' is true" is
just to assert P. Truth is not a deep metaphysical concept.
Key thinkers: Frank Ramsey, Paul Horwich
Strength: Elegant, avoids metaphysical puzzles
Challenge: Seems to avoid rather than answer the question.
WHICH THEORY IS CORRECT?
This remains one of the deepest open questions in philosophy.
Most people implicitly operate with correspondence theory,
but the others raise genuine and unresolved challenges.
Cognitive Biases and Epistemic Hygiene
COGNITIVE BIASES THAT DISTORT KNOWLEDGE

Understanding biases is applied epistemology in action.
CONFIRMATION BIAS:
Seeking and favoring information that confirms existing beliefs.
Mitigation: Actively seek disconfirming evidence.
Ask: "What would change my mind?"
ANCHORING BIAS:
Over-relying on the first piece of information encountered.
Mitigation: Consider the issue from scratch before looking at
others' numbers or estimates.
AVAILABILITY HEURISTIC:
Judging probability by how easily examples come to mind.
Plane crashes seem more dangerous than car crashes because they
are more memorable, not because they are more frequent.
Mitigation: Look up actual statistics rather than relying on memory.
DUNNING-KRUGER EFFECT:
Those with low competence in a domain overestimate their ability;
those with high competence tend to underestimate.
Mitigation: Seek expert feedback; calibrate your confidence
against actual performance.
MOTIVATED REASONING:
Reasoning toward a conclusion you WANT to be true.
The desire precedes the reasoning.
Mitigation: Notice when you feel strongly about a conclusion
and apply extra scrutiny to your own reasoning.
EPISTEMIC HYGIENE PRACTICES:
1. CALIBRATION: Regularly test your confidence against reality.
When you say "I'm 90% sure," are you right 90% of the time?
2. STEEL-MANNING: Represent opposing views in their strongest form.
3. PROBABILITY THINKING: Express beliefs as probabilities, not certainties.
4. SOURCE EVALUATION: Check credentials, methodology, and conflicts of interest.
5. INTELLECTUAL HUMILITY: "I might be wrong" is not weakness -- it is
the foundation of all genuine inquiry.
6. PRE-MORTEM: Before committing to a belief, imagine it's wrong.
What went wrong? This reveals hidden assumptions.
