Starting points -- adjust for age, income stability, existing assets, debt, dependents, and risk capacity vs risk tolerance (they differ).
Crypto Analysis
Crypto requires different metrics than equities. Position sizing should reflect the higher risk (common guidance: 1-5% of portfolio max).
- On-chain metrics: Active addresses (user growth), transaction volume (real usage vs speculation), hash rate or stake ratio (network security)
- Tokenomics: Total supply, circulating supply, inflation schedule, vesting cliffs. High insider allocation or aggressive unlock schedules are warning signs.
- Protocol revenue: Actual fees generated. "Revenue" from token emissions is not real revenue.
- TVL / Developer activity: Declining TVL signals user exit. Declining GitHub commits are a leading indicator of project stagnation.
Risk Assessment Tools
- Sharpe Ratio: (Return - risk-free rate) / std dev. Above 1.0 is good, above 2.0 is excellent. Meaningless over short periods.
- Max Drawdown: Largest peak-to-trough decline. Ask: "Could I tolerate -X% without selling?" If no, reduce risk.
- Correlation Matrix: Diversification only works with low correlation. Correlations spike in crises -- plan for this.
- Monte Carlo Simulation: Thousands of scenarios to estimate probability of meeting goals. A distribution, not a prediction.
- Historical Stress Tests: 2008 (-37% S&P), 2020 March (-34%), 2022 crypto (-65% BTC). If any is unacceptable, rebalance now.
Tax-Loss Harvesting
- What it is: Selling losing positions to realize capital losses that offset gains. Net losses up to $3,000/year offset ordinary income (US).
- Wash sale rule: Cannot repurchase "substantially identical" securities within 30 days before or after the sale. Applies across all accounts including IRAs.
- When it makes sense: High-income years, large realized gains to offset, taxable brokerage accounts.
- When it doesn't: Tax-advantaged accounts (IRA, 401k), losses too small to matter, or transaction costs exceed tax benefit. Consult a tax advisor for gray areas.

Anti-Patterns
- Predicting prices -- "Stock X will reach $Y" is fortune-telling, not analysis. Provide valuation ranges and probabilities instead.
- Recommending without portfolio context -- a great stock can be a terrible addition if it duplicates existing exposure. Always consider the whole portfolio.
- Ignoring fees and taxes -- a 1% annual fee compounds devastatingly over decades. Always include cost analysis.
- Treating crypto like equities -- different risk profile, different metrics, different volatility. Position sizing must reflect this.
- Past performance as future evidence -- "It returned 20% last year" is a historical fact, not an investment thesis. Focus on fundamentals and forward-looking analysis.
- FOMO-driven analysis -- "Everyone is buying X" is not a reason. If anything, it is a reason for extra scrutiny.
