Core Frameworks & Mental Models
1. Define the review before collecting evidence
- Choose the review purpose: simple (brief overview), applied (decision, program, business, government, or professional use), or academic (peer-reviewed depth and thoroughness).
- Narrow the research question and subquestions by population, setting, time, factors, and literature type until comprehensive treatment is feasible. Use free writing (about 3-20 minutes), then clustering, before selecting a manageable factor set.
- Run the objective research sequence: narrow the topic; identify initial parameters; search; outline after enough reading; search for confirmations, denials, pros, cons, and modifications; then analyze, compare, contrast, evaluate, synthesize, and integrate.
- Treat initial parameters as search hypotheses, not causal commitments. Use a spectrum-of-perspectives test after agreement appears.
2. Build a fit-based evidence base
- Weight peer-reviewed research most heavily for research conclusions. Add local, legal, government, professional, or popular sources only for the context and work their type can support. There is no universal source ratio.
- Use abstract-based relevance triage: screen population, factors, perspective, method, and results. Read directly relevant sources; park peripheral sources rather than forcing them into scope. Mine related research only when the relationship can be explained and bounded.
- Judge a source on rigor, direct relevance, context, timeliness, and information reported. Peer review is a quality floor, not proof of fit; older foundational work may remain necessary.
- Prefer paraphrase. Quote only when exact wording is unusually precise or valuable. Preserve meaning, qualifiers, population, limitations, and degree of support, and cite the author actually read.
- Keep a source-marked living outline: record author/date beside claims, mark quotations immediately, separate writer ideas, and label empty sections as gaps rather than inventing support.
3. Use six distinct lenses on the same evidence
Use the Critical Thinking Chart and the following cumulative chain; do not turn the lenses into interchangeable labels or six mandatory sections.
- Analysis is the value gate. Check theory, question, design, sample, sources, data interpretation, conclusions, credentials, and limitations. Separate relevance from integrity; a weak article may still be a bounded perspective or question generator.
- Comparison identifies meaningful structural or substantive similarities. Contrast identifies meaningful differences. Establish a shared frame, inspect comparability, cite both sides, and state why the relationship matters.
- Apply the Strong and Weak Comparison-Contrast Test to environment, procedures, participants, evaluation, purpose, and timing. Disclose inference and use the Narrow-Strand Rule when too many differences obscure what matters.
- Evaluation of Importance tests the literature against the specific target situation, not merely source quality. Use subquestions and evaluation points to identify what transfers, helps, harms, or remains a wild card. Place evaluation after each major comparison/contrast and repeat its essential implication in the synthesis.
- Synthesis uses the Spider Web model: sort compatible and complementary strands, preserve each population and condition, and construct a bounded framework. A synthesis is more than a two-source similarity.
- Integration handles apparent contradiction. Revisit populations, contexts, procedures, measures, timing, and limitations; formulate and test a conditional explanation. Preserve both findings and label unsupported links as provisional.
4. Make the reasoning visible in the draft
- Let evidence choose the organization: use higher-order-skill order, time, groups/roles, trends, themes, methods, researcher-centered, or topic-centered structure. Use a cluster-style if-then diagram for multiple possible paths, not proof of causation. Put synthesis/integration before conclusions.
- Build paragraphs as topic sentence -> relevant detail/evidence -> analysis or relationship -> contextual tie/transition. Use selective minimalism: retain detail only when it changes an integrity, relevance, or applicability judgment.
- Use citation-as-boundary: state the source claim, cite where it ends, then mark the reviewer's inference with a transition and cautious verbs such as appears, seems, or is possible.
- Introduction: state topic, importance, and perspective/interest; prefer a direct analytic opening for a literature review. Conclusion: return to topic, importance, critique results, supported conclusions, and the "so what" or next step.
- Use COLR or a flow sheet to critique methods, content, logic, integration, source appropriateness, and effectiveness. Create distance before self-review when possible (two weeks for a long draft; no more than about 20 pages per sitting).
- Revise from diagnosis: add research, strengthen or qualify claims, reorder, cut, or rewrite. Perform the technical editing pass only after substantive review and revision; maintain a personalized error list.
