When AI-generated code is too voluminous to trust through line-by-line reading, build small, deterministic verification tools to check it instead — and trust those tools not by reading them either, but because their narrow, deterministic scope makes exhaustive testing of the tool itself genuinely feasible, terminating the trust chain in a place that is actually verifiable rather than merely asserted.

Why This Is Best Practice

Why best: "Who verifies the verifiers" is a real objection, not a rhetorical dead end — if the checking tools themselves might be wrong, verification built on them is theater. The answer isn't to trust the checking tools on faith; it's to deliberately keep each checking tool small and single-purpose enough that exhaustively testing the tool itself is actually tractable, in a way that exhaustively testing a large, evolving application is not. Steps

1. 2. Build or generate a small, single-purpose, deterministic tool to check each property mechanically. Keep each tool narrowly scoped by design — a tool that checks exactly one property is small enough to make exhaustive testing of the tool itself tractable, unlike the larger, evolving application code it checks.

3. Give each verification tool its own dedicated, rigorous test suite, and trust the tool based on it consistently passing that suite — not based on anyone reading the tool's source. The tool's small size and deterministic behavior are what make this substitution valid; a tool too large or complex to be exhaustively tested this way doesn't qualify for this kind of trust.

4. Require the target code to pass multiple independent, interlocking checks rather than a single verification gate. Passing several independently-designed constraints simultaneously is substantially harder to game than passing one, since a change that games one check is likely to break another.

5. Keep the specification and acceptance-criteria layer — Gherkin/BDD-style scenarios, QA process definitions — under direct human authorship and review. The verification chain can confirm that code matches its specification; it cannot confirm the specification itself is the right one, which remains a human judgment call.

Layered verification for an AI-generated feature: A team has an AI agent implement a feature and, instead of reading the generated code, runs it through independent checks: a coverage-threshold tool, a cyclomatic-complexity linter, and a mutation-testing pass-rate tool — each one small enough to have its own dedicated, human-reviewed test suite confirming the checker itself correctly detects the property it's meant to catch.

Human-authored acceptance layer: The same team writes (or carefully reviews AI-drafted) Gherkin-style acceptance scenarios by hand, since these define what "correct" behavior actually means for the feature — while trusting the underlying implementation, once it passes those scenarios plus the deterministic quality tools, without a line-by-line read of the implementation itself.

Interlocking checks raising the cost of gaming: A pipeline requires generated code to simultaneously pass unit tests, a mutation-testing threshold, and a complexity linter. An agent under pressure to make tests pass by narrowly satisfying one check finds that doing so without also satisfying the other two independent checks is substantially harder than gaming a single test suite would have been.

Common Mistakes

• Trusting a verification tool simply because it exists and appears to check the right thing, without giving it its own dedicated test suite. A checking tool with no independent test coverage of its own is exactly the unverified link the mechanism is designed to avoid.
• Relying on a single, large verification gate instead of several small, independent, interlocking ones. A single large gate is itself harder to fully trust and easier to game than several smaller, cross-checking ones.
• Delegating acceptance-criteria authorship to the same automated system being verified. This lets a wrong specification pass its own conformance check cleanly, since the chain can only confirm conformance to spec, not the spec's correctness.
• Treating the verification chain as permanent infrastructure requiring no further human involvement. Periodic manual audit and spot-checking of actual behavior remains necessary; the chain relocates human oversight, it doesn't remove it.

When NOT to Use

• When the target code can already be reviewed directly, quickly, and completely by a human — the overhead of building a full deterministic-verifier chain isn't justified when direct review is already cheap and sufficient.
• When no reliable way exists to reduce the property being checked to something small and deterministic (genuinely subjective quality judgments, for instance) — the mechanism specifically depends on properties checkable mechanically and exhaustively; it is not a substitute for human judgment on properties that aren't.
• For safety- or mission-critical systems (medical devices, aerospace, and similar) where the consequence of an undetected gap in the verification chain is severe — rigorous direct human review and formal verification methods remain necessary in addition to, not instead of, this technique in that context.
