Apply Waterproofing Protocol
Apply a continuous waterproofing membrane to shower and wet area substrates before tile installation — covering all corners, transitions, and penetrations to prevent water intrusion, substrate damage, and mold growth that are impossible to see or correct after tile is installed.
Why This Is Best Practice
Why best: Continuous membrane before tiling is the only method that keeps water out of the substrate entirely — tile and grout are not waterproof on their own, so the membrane underneath is what actually stops intrusion.
Adopted by: The Tile Council of North America (TCNA) Handbook — the definitive installation standard used by all professional tile setters — requires a waterproofing membrane in all wet areas (Method W244 for showers). Schluter Systems (Kerdi), Laticrete (HydroBan), and Mapei (Mapelastic) are the three leading membrane systems, all compliant with ANSI A118.10. IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) S500 water damage restoration standards cite improper shower waterproofing as a primary cause of structural water damage claims.
Impact: The most expensive bathroom renovation failures are water-related: a shower without continuous waterproofing allows water behind the tile, degrading the substrate (drywall, cement board, or wood framing) over months to years, producing mold, rot, structural damage, and eventual tile failure. Repairing water damage behind a failed shower requires full demo and reinstallation — a $5,000–$15,000 repair that proper waterproofing at $200–$500 in materials would have prevented.
Steps
1. Select the correct waterproofing system for the application
Three main waterproofing approaches:
Sheet membrane (Schluter Kerdi, Wedi, USG Durock):
- Thin polyethylene or foam sheet bonded to the substrate with thinset
- Fastest to install; seamless in field areas; seams require overlap and sealant
- Best for: standard shower applications; cement board or drywall substrate
- TCNA Kerdi method is one of the most widely documented and contractor-familiar systems
Liquid-applied membrane (Laticrete HydroBan, Mapei Mapelastic, RedGard):
- Liquid polymer painted or rolled onto substrate; dries to form a continuous waterproof coating
- Easier to coat complex geometry (corners, curves); requires adequate dry time between coats
- Best for: complex shapes, floors with multiple transitions, experienced DIY
Foam board (Wedi, Schluter Kerdi-Board):
- Rigid polystyrene foam board that is inherently waterproof; replaces both cement board and membrane
- The most waterproof system when joints are sealed; eliminates membrane as a separate step
- Best for: bench seats, niches, and areas where rigid form is needed
Avoid as waterproofing: standard drywall (greenboard, purple board) and standard plywood — both allow water migration; neither is acceptable for shower wet areas per TCNA.
2. Prepare the substrate correctly
The membrane must bond to a clean, sound, dimensionally stable substrate:
- Cement board (Hardiebacker, Durock): preferred wall substrate for tiled showers; bond membrane with unmodified thinset
- Drywall: only acceptable for liquid membrane systems in vertical applications with proper product rating; not acceptable for floor applications
- Plywood: must be interior-grade, min ⅝" thick for floor; prime with primer before liquid membrane; check for deflection (L/360 standard)
Prepare: remove all dust, oil, and loose material; ensure fasteners are countersunk (no protruding screws or nails); fill any gaps or voids
3. Apply membrane — critical coverage areas
Corners and changes of plane are the highest-failure locations — they must receive reinforcement:
- Apply a layer of thinset; embed a corner sealing band (Kerdi-Band or similar mesh tape) into wet thinset at all inside corners (floor/wall, wall/wall) and all transitions
- Press the band firmly; eliminate wrinkles and air bubbles
Penetrations (drains, pipes, fixtures):
- Drain connection: the membrane must connect continuously to the drain flange; specialized drain systems (Kerdi drain, Laticrete drain) are designed for this; generic drain connections require careful sealing with sealant + band
- Pipe penetrations: collar the pipe with membrane material sealed with sealant; no gaps
Field (walls, floor):
- Walls: overlap sheets at least 2 inches; press firmly into thinset; eliminate air pockets
- Liquid membrane: apply minimum 2 coats; allow first coat to fully cure before second; total dry film thickness must meet manufacturer specification (typically 30–40 mils)
4. Flood test before tiling
Before any tile installation:
- Seal the drain
- Fill the shower floor with water to ~1 inch depth
- Mark the water level with tape
- Wait 24 hours
- Check: if water level is unchanged = waterproofing passes; if level dropped = there is a leak in the membrane that must be found and repaired before proceeding
Skip the flood test and a hidden leak will become a major failure after tiling.
5. Maintain continuity through transition points
Common waterproofing continuity breaks:
- Shower curb/threshold: membrane must wrap continuously over the top of the curb and down both sides; the curb is the first element to fail if not fully waterproofed
- Niche walls: a tiled niche is a pocket where water accumulates; all four walls and the back of the niche must be membraned continuously with corners sealed; the niche must pitch forward slightly for drainage
- Shower-to-floor transition: at the shower entry, the membrane from the shower floor must overlap or connect to any floor waterproofing; the transition joint must be filled with sealant (not grout) for movement accommodation
6. Time the tiling correctly after waterproofing
Before tiling:
- Liquid membranes: allow full cure time (typically 24–48 hours at 70°F); check manufacturer minimum; cool temperatures extend cure time
- Sheet membranes (Kerdi): can tile immediately over thinset-bonded sheet membrane once thinset has set (24 hours); no additional wait
Bond tile to the membrane with the correct mortar:
- Kerdi/sheet membrane: use polymer-modified thinset or unmodified for the specific system (check manufacturer specs)
- Liquid membrane: most use polymer-modified thinset over cured membrane
Common Mistakes
- Waterproofing the walls but not the floor: water flows down and collects at the floor/wall junction. The floor and all corners are the highest-failure areas — they must be membraned continuously.
- Skipping the flood test: a membrane with a pinhole or improperly sealed seam passes visual inspection but fails under hydrostatic pressure. Flood test before tiling — always.
- Using grout instead of sealant at changes of plane: sealant (silicone or urethane) at inside corners and transitions accommodates movement; grout at these locations cracks under normal thermal and structural movement, allowing water entry.
When NOT to Use
- Below-slab waterproofing or foundation waterproofing: these are structural waterproofing applications requiring different products (sheet-applied membranes, crystalline waterproofing, drainage systems) beyond the scope of wet-area tile waterproofing.
