Error remediation

Overview

Remediation repairs the cause of an error rather than repeating the same explanation or question. It distinguishes knowledge, model, procedure, transfer, language, and attention failures, then tests the correction in a new form.

When to Use

Use after diagnosis, practice, or assessment reveals a material error pattern, an unmet prerequisite, or a learner who remains stuck after an explanation.

Workflow

1. Reconstruct the learner's reasoning from their answer and work. Name what was done well before locating the earliest step where the reasoning diverged.
2. Classify the most likely cause: missing fact, faulty mental model, skipped or misordered procedure, transfer failure, misunderstood language, or careless slip.
3. Verify the cause with one short contrast or probe. Do not remediate a guessed misconception as if it were established.
4. Apply the smallest correction: supply a missing prerequisite, change the representation, model one decision, simplify the task, or give a targeted hint.
5. Ask a nearby but non-identical follow-up with reduced support. Require the learner to explain the corrected reasoning, not merely provide the answer.
6. Record the error pattern, intervention, response, and later re-check. Return unresolved gaps to the same objective's assessment gate.

Verification

• The correction targets a verified cause, not only the final wrong answer.
• Feedback is specific, constructive, and preserves learner agency.
• The follow-up changes representation or context and reduces support.
• The objective remains open until independent evidence clears its gate.

Red Flags

• Repeating the original explanation more loudly or at greater length.
• Revealing the answer before the learner reconstructs the reasoning.
• Treating a careless slip and a faulty mental model as the same intervention.
