• Evaluating whether to refinance, extend, or return equipment at lease maturity
• Structuring equipment finance facilities for syndication or balance-sheet lending

Inputs To Gather

• Equipment details: asset type, manufacturer, model, age, condition, serial numbers, and original acquisition cost
• Vendor quote or invoice: purchase price, delivery terms, installation costs, and any bundled service/maintenance contracts
• Financing parameters: requested term, target advance rate, proposed rate/spread, payment frequency, and any step-up/step-down structures
• Residual assumptions: third-party appraisal or guide values (e.g., EquipmentWatch, Rouse, NADA for vehicles), historical disposition data, and salvage estimates
• Borrower financials: recent financial statements, debt service coverage ratio (DSCR), existing liens on equipment, and credit rating or risk grade
• Tax and accounting context: borrower's tax rate, depreciation method (MACRS class life, straight-line), and whether ASC 842 / IFRS 16 lease classification matters to the borrower
• Collateral documentation: UCC filing status, title/registration, insurance coverage requirements

Workflow

1. Asset Identification & Valuation

   • Catalog each asset with description, quantity, unit cost, and total cost
   • Obtain or estimate fair market value (FMV), orderly liquidation value (OLV), and forced liquidation value (FLV)
   • Determine appropriate advance rate based on asset type and liquidation profile — typical ranges: 75–90% of OLV for general industrial equipment, 80–100% of FMV for over-the-road trucks [VERIFY: advance rate norms vary by lender policy and asset class]

2. Residual Value Estimation

   • Source residual benchmarks from industry guides or auction data
   • Apply adjustments for usage intensity, geographic market, technology obsolescence risk, and maintenance history
   • Stress-test residual under base, downside, and severe scenarios (e.g., base = guide value, downside = 75% of guide, severe = FLV)
   • Flag assets with thin secondary markets or high obsolescence risk (e.g., specialized software-dependent equipment)

3. Lease vs. Buy Analysis

   • Model total cost of ownership under each alternative:
     • Purchase (cash): acquisition cost + maintenance + insurance − tax depreciation benefit − salvage proceeds
     • Loan-financed purchase: same as cash purchase + interest expense − interest tax shield
     • Finance lease: present value of lease payments + any purchase option price − tax benefits of deemed ownership

5. Documentation & Reporting

   • Compile findings into a structured management report: executive summary, asset schedule, valuation summary, lease-vs-buy comparison table, risk factors, and recommendation

Output

The deliverable is a Management Report containing:

• Executive summary with financing recommendation and key rationale
• Asset schedule listing each piece of equipment with valuation data
• Lease vs. buy comparison matrix showing NPV, total cost, and balance-sheet impact for each alternative
• Residual value analysis with base/downside/severe scenarios
• Risk summary identifying key exposures: residual risk, concentration, obsolescence, and borrower credit factors
• Recommended structure: term, advance rate, payment schedule, covenants, and collateral requirements

Quality Checks

• All asset valuations are sourced or justified — no unsupported residual assumptions
• Discount rate used in NPV analysis matches the borrower's incremental borrowing rate or the lender's required yield, as appropriate
• Tax depreciation schedules align with applicable MACRS class lives [VERIFY: confirm asset class and current bonus depreciation rules]
• Lease classification under ASC 842 / IFRS 16 is correctly applied based on lease terms (transfer of ownership, purchase option, lease term vs. useful life, present value vs. fair value tests)
