Smart Skill Loading

Purpose

Progressive disclosure pattern that loads YAML metadata first from all skills, then conditionally loads full SKILL.md content only for skills matching the current task, achieving 1400 token reduction in system prompts.

When to Use

• Managing multiple skills (8+ skills)
• Token budget constraints
• Context bloat prevention
• System prompt optimization
• Selective expertise loading
• Tasks needing only specific skills

Core Instructions

Loading Strategy

Smart skill loading follows this process:

1. Metadata Scan Phase (Lightweight)

   • Load all YAML frontmatter from all SKILL.md files
   • Cost: ~25 tokens per skill × N skills
   • Total: ~200 tokens for 8 skills

2. Task Analysis Phase

   • Parse user request for keywords
   • Extract domain terms, file types, actions
   • Build trigger pattern

3. Skill Matching Phase

   • Compare task triggers against skill descriptions
   • Score relevance based on keyword matches
   • Select top N most relevant skills (typically 1-3)

4. Conditional Loading Phase

   • Load full SKILL.md only for matched skills
   • Cost: ~200-400 tokens per loaded skill
   • Progressive disclosure for supporting files

5. Context Injection Phase

   • Inject matched skills into system prompt
   • Reference supporting files but don't load yet
   • Load supporting files only when explicitly referenced

Token Savings Calculation

Without Smart Loading:

8 skills × 200 tokens avg = 1,600 tokens
+ System prompt bloat
+ All skills loaded regardless of relevance

With Smart Loading:

8 metadata files × 25 tokens = 200 tokens  (Phase 1)
1-2 matched skills × 200 tokens = 200-400 tokens  (Phase 4)
+ Supporting files loaded on-demand
= Total: 400-600 tokens
= Savings: 1,000-1,400 tokens (62-87% reduction)

Matching Examples

Example 1: PDF Task

User request: "Extract fields from invoice.pdf"

Matching process:

Task terms: [extract, fields, invoice, .pdf]
Relevant skills:
  - progressive-metadata (description mentions "PDF extraction") → score: 15
  - plan-execute (no PDF mentions) → score: 0
  - api-integrator (no PDF mentions) → score: 0

Loaded: progressive-metadata only
Tokens: 200 (metadata scan) + 350 (progressive-metadata) = 550 tokens
Saved: 1,600 - 550 = 1,050 tokens

Example 2: API Task

User request: "Test the REST API endpoints for authentication"

Matching process:

Example 3: Multi-Step Refactor

User request: "Refactor the authentication module to use JWT, need to plan this carefully"

Matching process:

Progressive Disclosure with Supporting Files

When a skill references supporting files, they're NOT loaded initially:

Optimizing Skill Descriptions for Smart Loading

To maximize smart loading effectiveness, write descriptions with:

Integration with Claude Code

Claude Code CLI automatically uses smart loading when:

1. Multiple skills exist in .claude/skills/
2. Skills have proper YAML frontmatter
3. Descriptions include relevant triggers

No additional configuration needed - it's built into the official spec.

Best Practices

Do:

• Write comprehensive skill descriptions (200-1024 chars)
• Include specific trigger keywords in descriptions
• Use progressive disclosure for supporting files
• Keep SKILL.md focused on core instructions
• Reference examples/templates rather than inlining

Don't:

• Write vague descriptions that match everything
• Load all skills regardless of task
• Inline huge examples in SKILL.md body
• Duplicate information across files
• Create skills that overlap heavily
