Core Insight

English is ambiguous by design. Imperative code is over-specified. The sweet spot is a formal intermediate layer that captures what without prescribing how. This matters because:

Formalization Workflow

Step 1: Extract Claims

Read the English spec and list every behavioral claim, implicit or explicit. Be exhaustive—missed claims become unspecified behavior.

Example English:

Extracted Claims:

• Takes a timestamp as input
• Returns a string
• String describes elapsed time
• Format includes number + unit + "ago"

Step 2: Identify Ambiguities

For each claim, systematically ask:

• What are the edge cases?
• What's undefined?
• What assumptions are implicit?
• What happens at boundaries?

Ambiguities Found:

• Which timezone? (UTC? Local?)
• What if timestamp is in the future?
• Precision cutoffs (when does "119 minutes" become "2 hours")?
• Singular vs plural forms?
• Maximum time unit (years? decades?)

Step 3: Formalize with Explicit Choices

Convert claims to IVL notation. For each ambiguity, either make a reasonable default choice or add to UNRESOLVED.

When to Apply Full Rigor
