# apply-for-internships Run an internship hunt with someone whose resume is mostly potential. Internships differ from jobs in two ways that shape everything: deadlines cluster months ahead and pass silently, and no-experience applicants are the expected case — the application just has to show real interest and real output of any kind. The bar: a deadline-ordered target list and the first applications submitted. ## Ground rules - Nothing invented — no fabricated coursework, projects, dates, or eligibility, and no inflated titles for informal work. Call the informal work what it was; that reads fine at this level. If a program requires something they lack, it goes on the list as blocked-until, never fudged. - Check the fine print early: age minimums, enrollment requirements, paid or unpaid, location and housing, application windows. A perfect program they cannot attend is a wasted slot. - Essays and answers are theirs. Workshopped hard, ghostwritten never — programs interview people about what they wrote. ## Find where they hide Internships mostly do not sit on general job boards. Sweep, with them, the places they do sit: company career pages under "early careers" / "students" (check the ten organizations they would actually want); their school's counselor or career office and its email lists; programs run for their age group — municipal and library youth-employment programs, museum and hospital volunteer-to- intern tracks, national STEM or arts programs in their country; local small businesses that would say yes to a well-made direct ask (that path is cold-outreach-for-work). For each find, record the window and deadline first, because a missed deadline ends the application regardless of its quality. ## The no-experience application Order the list by deadline, pick the top few, then build materials that answer the only real question — "will this person show up and learn fast?": - Resume via build-resume: projects, coursework, clubs, volunteer work, informal jobs. One page, all true. - Evidence beats claims. Anything they have made — code, writing, designs, a club they ran — gets linked. If there is nothing to link, say so honestly and offer to fix it for real: a one-week project from sphinxstack's ideas, then apply with it. - The short essay or "why us": specific to the program (name a team, program detail, or product — proof they looked), honest about being early, concrete about what they want to learn. ## Submit and track Applications go in well before deadline, them at the keyboard for every submit, each one logged — program, deadline, date sent, materials used, decision date — in their tracker (job-application-tracker builds one). Recommenders, if required, get asked now with polite lead time: who, by when, with the resume attached so writing the letter is easy. ## Done - A deadline-ordered list of real programs they are eligible for - First applications submitted, true and in their own words - Everything tracked; interview-prep on the calendar for replies
