# Material UI Skill Material UI Skill is a Codex-style skill for designing, implementing, and reviewing Android app UI with native Jetpack Compose Material 3 and Material 3 Expressive patterns. It began life inside a mobile-first business operating tool and works for any Compose Material 3 app. The skill keeps UI work practical, fast, accessible, calm under pressure, and native to Android. ## What's Included - `material-ui/SKILL.md`: the skill entrypoint and core rules. - `material-ui/references/implementation-contract.md`: source-of-truth implementation guidance. - `material-ui/references/component-catalog.md`: Material 3 component decision map. - `material-ui/references/app-components.md`: app-owned component philosophy and candidates. - `material-ui/references/material-symbols.md`: icon policy and preview workflow. - `material-ui/references/audit-checklist.md`: review checklist for Android UI work. - `material-ui/scripts/generate-material-symbol-preview.mjs`: helper to preview local Material Symbol drawables. - `material-ui/agents/openai.yaml`: optional agent-facing display metadata. ## Install Copy the skill folder into your Codex skills directory: ```sh mkdir -p ~/.codex/skills cp -R material-ui ~/.codex/skills/ ``` Or clone this repo and symlink the skill: ```sh mkdir -p ~/.codex/skills ln -s "$(pwd)/material-ui" ~/.codex/skills/material-ui ``` Restart Codex after installing so the skill can be discovered. ## Use Ask Codex to use the skill when working on Android app UI: ```text Use $material-ui to review this screen for native Material 3 quality. ``` Useful prompts: ```text Use $material-ui to redesign this Compose screen with the app's native M3 patterns. ``` ```text Use $material-ui to audit this PR for Android UI regressions. ``` ```text Use $material-ui to choose Material Symbols for this navigation update. ``` ## Icon Preview Helper From your app checkout, run: ```sh node .agents/skills/material-ui/scripts/generate-material-symbol-preview.mjs ``` By default this writes: ```text scratchpad/material-symbol-preview.html ``` You can also pass explicit paths: ```sh node material-ui/scripts/generate-material-symbol-preview.mjs \ --source apps/android/app/src/main/res/drawable \ --output scratchpad/material-symbol-preview.html ``` ## Notes For Developers - This skill assumes your Android app uses Jetpack Compose Material 3. - It prefers `androidx.compose.material3` components and local Material Symbols Rounded XML drawables. - It intentionally avoids generic SaaS dashboard patterns, heavy decoration, Material 2 imports, and new UI dependencies unless there is a clear reason. - Keep the `references/`, `scripts/`, and `agents/` directories next to `SKILL.md`; the skill uses relative paths. ## License No license has been applied yet. Add an explicit license before treating this as reusable open-source code.
