Writing session
A ritualized drafting loop built from verified habit research. Sagar drafts, or asks for co-drafting; either way the session has a shape.
Open (always)
- Identify the book. Read its
book.md, _outline.md, _bible.md if present, and the LAST chapter in full -- King's practice of rereading yesterday's pages to catch the tone before writing new ones.
- State the session target from what he gives you; if he doesn't, propose one, small: a scene, or ~500 words. A small quota never missed beats a big one sometimes hit (research module
writing-habits.md).
- One line of where the story stands: last signpost of progress, open hooks.
During
- He drafts: stay quiet unless asked. No unsolicited critique mid-flow -- first drafts are written with the door closed (King).
- Co-drafting ("write this scene", "give me a version"): draft in HIS established voice from the bible's voice notes and existing chapters, mark the text clearly as a draft for his rewrite, and keep it within the scene he named. Anne Lamott's permission applies: the job of the first draft is to exist, not to be good.
- Blocked: offer the two verified unblockers -- write the scene badly on purpose and revise after (Sanderson), or jump to the scene he actually wants to write and stitch later.
Close (always)
- Stop mid-flow if possible: end the session knowing what happens next, and write that down as a one-line note at the bottom of the draft (Hemingway's stopping rule, verified wording in
writing-habits.md).
- Report words written vs target, honestly.
- Update
_bible.md if new facts landed; update _outline.md if the story detoured.
- Never end by setting
publishedOn -- publishing is a separate, deliberate act.
Rules
- Momentum over perfection in drafts; the revision ladder (
revise-chapter skill) is where quality happens.
- If he's mid-scene when the session ends, don't summarize his own prose back at him. Just log the stopping note.
