WHEN: When applying direct marketing knowledge |
Direct Marketing
direct-marketing
Core Principle
"Most small business advertising and marketing stinks."
The key insight: Most business owners copy what their peers do (marketing incest), creating a circle of mediocrity. The answer is to cross "The Great Divide" from traditional advertising to direct response marketing — where EVERYTHING is tracked and measured.
The Great Divide
| Traditional Marketing | Direct Response Marketing |
|---|
| Based on faith and hope | Based on data and accountability |
| Brand awareness, visibility | Measurable sales and leads |
| Impossible to track | Every dollar tracked |
| Wasted money | Return on investment |
| "How do we look?" | "What did we sell?" |
The Key Question
"Would you fly with a pilot who refuses to use instruments, preferring instead to fly by faith?"
Most advertising is done by feel. Direct marketing is done by measurement.
The Success Ratio
- 1% create tremendous wealth
- 4% do very well
- 15% earn good livings
- 60% stall and struggle
- 20% fail
"The overwhelming majority of your peers are engaged in marketing that fails them."
The Big Switch
What It Is
Stop copying big brands and big companies. Start copying direct marketers who share your agenda: spend $1, get $2+ back.
Why Big Companies Are Wrong Models
- They have different agendas (board, stockholders, Wall Street)
- They can afford to waste money
- They have brand recognition you don't
- They play a different game
The Right Model
Find someone successful who shares your purpose, objectives, and agenda — then study what THEY do.

SALES
| Side | What It Is | You Already Know |

| Message | What you say | YES — tweak it |
| Market | Who you say it to | YES — refine it |
| Media | Where you say it | NO — learn this |
| Sales | The result | The goal |
The Ten No-BS Rules (Commandments)
Rule 1: There Will Always Be an Offer
Every communication must ask someone to do something specific.
Types of offers:
| Type | Purpose | Example |
|---|
| Purchase offer | Immediate sale | "Buy 1 Get 1 Free" |
| Lead generation | Capture contact | "Free consultation" |
Rule 2: There Will Be a Reason to Respond NOW
Every offer needs urgency.
- Time limit
- Scarcity
- Price increase
- Bonus expires
Rule 3: Clear Instructions
Tell people exactly what to do.
- Call this number
- Go to this URL
- Use this code
- Say this phrase
Rule 4: Tracking, Measurement, Accountability
If you can't track it, you can't improve it.
Every campaign needs:
- Unique phone number
- Unique URL/promo code
- Separate landing pages
- Ask "How did you hear about us?"
Rule 5: Only No-Cost Brand Building
Don't pay for brand awareness. Build brand through:
- Content marketing
- Referrals
- Public relations
- Customer experiences
"If you wouldn't put it on a bank deposit slip, it's not a real metric."
Rule 6: There Will Be Follow-Up
One touch rarely converts. Plan:
- Email sequence
- Phone follow-up
- Retargeting ads
- Drip campaigns
Rule 7: Strong Copy
Words sell. Use:
- Specific benefits (not features)
- Emotional triggers
- Credibility builders
- Clear value proposition
Rule 8: Look Like Mail-Order Advertising
Even in other media, use direct response principles:
- Compelling headline
- Clear offer
- Call to action
- Tracking mechanism
Rule 9: Results Rule, Period
- If it doesn't produce, it doesn't continue
- Kill losers immediately
- Double down on winners
- No excuses, no opinions — data only
Rule 10: Be a Tough-Minded Disciplinarian
Put your business on a "strict direct marketing diet."
- No vanity spending
- No "awareness" campaigns
- Only accountable marketing
The Two Types of Offers
Purchase Offers
Request immediate sale:
- Buy one, get one free
- % discount
- Gift with purchase
- Payment plan
Lead Generation Offers
Capture interest for further follow-up:
- Free consultation
- Free report/video
- Free assessment
- Free trial
Note: Some marketing has NEITHER — just shows up and talks about itself. That's not marketing.
The Offer Architecture
What Makes an Offer Irresistible?
- Specificity — Exact numbers, not vague promises
- Value — Clear benefit, clear savings
- Urgency — Why NOW?
- Risk reversal — Guarantee removes fear
- Easy action — Clear instructions
The Godfather Offer
"An offer they can't refuse."
Key elements:
- Amazing value
- No risk
- Clear benefit
- Compelling reason to act NOW
The Tracking Hierarchy
| Level | What to Track |
|---|
| Campaign | Which ad/media source |
| Offer | Which offer performed |
| Creative | Which headline/image |
| Channel | Which platform |
| Customer | Who referred who |
The Test
Ask: "Can I put this on a bank deposit slip?"
- Views? NO
- Likes? NO
- Impressions? NO
- Sales? YES
- Leads? YES
- Revenue? YES
Why Most Marketing Fails
Marketing Incest
"When you got into business, you looked at what everybody else in the business was doing and copied it. Gradually, you tried to do it better, but not radically different."
Everyone in an industry stands in a circle looking inward at each other. Nobody looks outward.
The Result
80% poor, 20% prosperous across all businesses.
The Cure
Cross the Great Divide. Find radical, different ways to market. Look outside your industry for models.
The Accountability Principle
| Traditional | Direct Response |
|---|
| Marketing spends money | Marketing produces money |
| "I hope it works" | "I know it works" |
| Vague results | Exact numbers |
| Blame the economy | Blame the marketing |
| Faith-based | Data-based |
Key Dan Kennedy Quotes
"Most, yes, most of what you see done in advertising and marketing is being done by people who don't know what they are doing."
"If you try to get a business owner to accurately tell you where his customers and sales come from, what it costs to get a customer, he can't. He's guessing."
"You are investing real money. Why wouldn't you demand a real result?"
"Only direct marketing imposes discipline by always making an offer."
"Be a tough-minded disciplinarian and put your business on a strict direct marketing diet."
Key Questions for Direct Marketing
/prompts:
- "What's my offer for this campaign? (Purchase or lead gen)"
- "What's my reason to respond NOW?"
- "What are my clear instructions for the prospect?"
- "How am I tracking this campaign's results?"
- "What's my follow-up sequence?"
- "If I can't track it, should I be doing it?"
- "What would I cut if I only spent on accountable marketing?"
- "Am I copying my peers (marketing incest) or looking outward for better models?"
- "Which of my marketing has NO offer at all?"
