Moving off-app is a small commitment signal that makes the connection feel real and keeps it from dying in a crowded inbox. Timing and ease are everything.

Timing

• Earn it first. Move off-app after there's genuine rapport, not in message two. Premature asks read as either spammy or only-after-one-thing.
• Best moment: right as you're making concrete plans, or when the conversation is clearly flowing and the app is just friction.
• Tie it to a reason. "Easier to sort out Thursday over text" gives the move a natural purpose.

How to do it smoothly

• Pair it with the plan. "Let's trade numbers and lock in Thursday" bundles the ask with something they already said yes to.
• Offer, don't demand. "Here's my number if you'd rather text — no pressure either way" lets them opt in comfortably.
• Give them the choice of channel. Some prefer Instagram first; that's fine. The point is continuity, not a specific app.
• Keep it light. It's a logistics step, not a milestone speech.
