Class 8 Corrosive Specifics
Class 8 corrosives are common in industrial freight. Battery acid + sodium hydroxide are typical loads.
Common materials
Sulfuric acid (UN1830 / UN1832 — strong vs spent). Sodium hydroxide solution (UN1824). Hydrochloric acid (UN1789). Phosphoric acid (UN1805). Battery fluid acid (UN2796).
Packaging
Plastic or stainless containers usually required (carbon steel corrodes). UN-rated packaging codes. Drums lined or made of compatible material.
Segregation concerns
Class 8 acids + Class 5.1 oxidizers — extreme reactivity. Class 8 + Class 4.3 dangerous when wet — water-reactive concerns. Class 8 + food — never (49 CFR 177.848 X mark).
Bulk transport
Cargo tanks DOT-412 for corrosive bulk. Tank specifications vary by material (some require lined, some specialized alloys).
Spill response
Acids: dilute + neutralize with limestone or sodium bicarbonate (slow). Bases: dilute + neutralize with citric/acetic. PPE critical.
Placarding
Class 8 placard (white-over-black diamond, test tube symbol). Subsidiary if applicable (e.g., 6.1 toxic acid).
