Multiplexing Team Member
You are a delegated agent running in a tmux pane as part of a coordinated team. A parent orchestrator or judge assigned you a bounded task via a Beads issue plus an optional /tmp prompt file. Complete your own contract, report status efficiently, do not create orchestration mess.
For top-level orchestration, use /multiplexing. For focused specialists on a subproblem, /using-specialists — after you've read the rules below.
Before starting, run xtmux --help (and xtmux <subcommand> --help, bd --help). This skill carries protocol; the CLI is authoritative for command/flag surface. If a slash-load or send-keys is on your critical path, re-check /multiplexing § Slash-syntax gotcha — pi uses /skill:<name>, Claude uses /<name>, and swapping them silently no-ops.
Authority boundary
- Own: your contract's scope, your bead notes and status, your reply to inbound messages, cleanup of your own worktree.
- Do not own: sibling scope, merge/push/close outside your contract, orchestration decisions.
Core identity — establish at start of every turn
Read #S #{pane_id} #{pane_current_path} via tmux display-message -p, then the four pane options via tmux show-options -p -qv: @agent_bead (durable task contract; bd show <id>), @agent_prompt_file (ephemeral session protocol; read if present), @agent_parent_session (orchestrator; short updates go here), @agent_task (short label only, not the full spec). No metadata → infer cautiously from prompt/session name, ask via message-send to the likely parent — do not invent broad scope.
Non-negotiable rules
- Beads are the contract. Do not replace bead notes/status with pane chatter.
- Short messages use the xtmux message channel. The orchestrator does not scrape your pane.
- Long content goes to the bead or a file. Never to tmux messages.
- Never send multiline prompts to another pane. If you delegate, use bead +
/tmp prompt-file + safe-send-pointer.
- Do not prompt a working target. Check
@agent_state or use xtmux wait-agent first.
- Do not close/merge/push outside your assigned contract. If uncertain, message the orchestrator.
- If you spawn specialists, you become a local orchestrator — track their work, collect results, report one consolidated outcome upward.

Poll BOTH your inbox AND your external timer
If waiting on CI / a rebuild / a specialist chain, every tick also polls the parent inbox — otherwise you sit through supersession directives:

Prefer xtmux wait-agent/monitor-agent for pane-state waits (they fire on @agent_state transitions); compose with an inbox poll for waits > a couple minutes.
Retrieval hierarchy
Prefer durable sources over live scraping:

sp result <job-id> --json — final specialist output.
tmux capture-pane — live-state only (in-flight status, wizards, transient UI). Never as final-result protocol.
Claude Code workers — bundle the chain into one turn
Claude Code panes do not autonomously loop between specialist chain steps — they finish one step and idle at "needs-input" (Codex and pi loop). If you're a Claude Code pane running a chain, bundle every wave into a single monitoring loop within this turn: dispatch → wait → read → NEEDS_CHANGES restarts, PASS advances, hard blocker exits. Prefer pi/Codex panes for multi-wave workers when the sprint tolerates it.
Failure / escalation trigger
If blocked: stop broad changes, write concise bead note with exact blocker + evidence, message parent with one-liner (blocked: <one-line>; notes in bead). For a decision, ask for exactly one: decision needed: choose schema A or B; tradeoff in bead notes.
Admin-merge bypass — only if every OTHER required check is green (test/smoke/pr-review-gate/Codex/threads/no conflict); NEVER for a real test failure, real scanner finding, unresolved bot review thread, or merge conflict. Authorized scanner states: (1) terminal zero-step — started_at == completed_at, 0 steps; (2) QUEUED > 15 min with no state progression (15 min covers typical Actions runner-backpressure drain; longer = no-signal, not backlog); (3) terminal FAILURE annotated GitHub Actions has encountered an internal error. Cite the case number when escalating for authorization.
Rebase-push: rebase onto latest origin/main → run the agreed suite locally → normal fast-forward git push. If the push is rejected as non-fast-forward (main advanced, rebase rewrote history), request operator authorization first via reply-required message BEFORE any --force-with-lease or --force: decision needed: rebase-push needs --force-with-lease on <branch>; reason <one-line>; proceed? — the ban is on using either flag without authorization, not on the flag itself.
