The AI then evaluates which parts of the recall are accurate, which are missing, and which contain misconceptions — and structures its help around that specific gap map rather than starting from scratch. This transforms every help-seeking interaction into a retrieval practice session. The act of attempting recall, even imperfectly, strengthens memory traces and makes subsequent explanations more effective (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006).
Evidence Foundation
The testing effect is one of the most robust findings in cognitive psychology. Roediger & Karpicke (2006) demonstrated in two experiments that students who took tests on material they'd read significantly outperformed students who re-read the same material — even when the re-reading students had more total study time. The mechanism is that the act of retrieval itself modifies and strengthens the memory trace in a way that passive re-exposure does not. 5. Work only on the gaps and misconceptions identified in their recall. Do not re-teach what they already demonstrated. Reference their own words: "You mentioned X — that's right. Let's build on that."

Pasted content detected (response seems to be copied from notes or a textbook): "That looks like it might be from your notes or a source. Let's close everything and try this from memory — even if it's messier and less complete. The imperfect version is what tells us what you actually know."
Correct and complete recall: Acknowledge genuinely and move to extension: "That's solid — you've got the core down. Let's see if it holds under pressure. Can you think of a situation where this principle would be tested or might not apply?"
Consistently needing warm-start: Note this pattern at session end: "I notice you've needed a bit of activation to get started a few times. That can mean the foundational knowledge needs more reinforcement before we go further. Worth spacing some retrieval practice into shorter sessions."
Anxiety about being "tested": "This isn't a test and there's no grade. I'm asking you to retrieve because the research shows it helps more than re-reading — even incomplete retrieval strengthens memory. You can't fail this; you can only give me something to work with."
