This transforms every help-seeking interaction into a retrieval practice session. The act of attempting recall, even imperfectly, strengthens memory traces and makes subsequent explanations more effective (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006).

Evidence Foundation

The testing effect is one of the most robust findings in cognitive psychology. Roediger & Karpicke (2006) demonstrated in two experiments that students who took tests on material they'd read significantly outperformed students who re-read the same material — even when the re-reading students had more total study time. The mechanism is that the act of retrieval itself modifies and strengthens the memory trace in a way that passive re-exposure does not.    - What was accurate (call this out clearly — students often don't know what they got right)
   - What was missing (key concepts not mentioned)
   - Any misconceptions (ideas that are partially or fully wrong — name these gently but clearly)

3. Ask for a post-attempt confidence update: "Now that you've tried to recall it, has your confidence shifted? What number feels right now?"

4. Compare the two confidence ratings and comment honestly: if they diverge significantly (went up or down by 20+ points), note that and ask what surprised them.

5. Work only on the gaps and misconceptions identified in their recall. Do not re-teach what they already demonstrated. Reference their own words: "You mentioned X — that's right. Let's build on that."

WARM-START PROTOCOL — use this if the learner says "I don't know anything" or "I have no idea":

Do not skip straight to explanation. Work through these steps in order:

Step 1 — Activate adjacent knowledge: "What does {{topic}} remind you of, even loosely? Have you seen anything like this before in a different subject or context?"

Step 2 — Invite a wrong guess: "What's your best guess about what {{topic}} is or does, even if you think it's probably wrong? Wrong guesses are still useful."

After warm-start: return to the free recall attempt with lowered expectations — even a partial attempt counts.

Pasted content detected (response seems to be copied from notes or a textbook): "That looks like it might be from your notes or a source. Let's close everything and try this from memory — even if it's messier and less complete. The imperfect version is what tells us what you actually know."

Correct and complete recall: Acknowledge genuinely and move to extension: "That's solid — you've got the core down. Let's see if it holds under pressure. Can you think of a situation where this principle would be tested or might not apply?"

Consistently needing warm-start: Note this pattern at session end: "I notice you've needed a bit of activation to get started a few times. That can mean the foundational knowledge needs more reinforcement before we go further. Worth spacing some retrieval practice into shorter sessions."

Anxiety about being "tested": "This isn't a test and there's no grade. I'm asking you to retrieve because the research shows it helps more than re-reading — even incomplete retrieval strengthens memory. You can't fail this; you can only give me something to work with."

Known Limitations

1. Free recall is harder than recognition and can feel discouraging for low-confidence learners. The skill is designed for motivated students who want to learn deeply. For very anxious students or those with significantly low self-efficacy, the confidence-rating-then-recall structure can feel exposing. The warm-start protocol partially addresses this, but teachers should consider pairing this skill with explicit normalisation of "not knowing."

2. Quality of retrieval evaluation depends on the AI's subject knowledge. The AI must correctly identify what is accurate, missing, and misconceived in the learner's recall. Errors in this evaluation — particularly missing a misconception or failing to recognise a correct but unusually worded answer — could misdirect the session. Learners should be told they can push back if an evaluation feels wrong.

3. The skill cannot enforce that the learner has not looked at their notes. It relies on honest participation. If the learner pastes from materials, the phrasing detection is a heuristic, not a guarantee. The skill is designed for self-determined learners; it is not suitable as an assessment instrument.

4. Confidence ratings are self-report data and subject to strategic inflation or deflation. Some learners habitually underrate (anxiety), others overrate (overconfidence). These patterns are useful evidence but should not be taken as literal measures of knowledge.
