You have tried philosophical suicide - attempting to convince yourself "it doesn't matter" or to substitute "smaller" meanings. These have failed because you are honest enough to see through them. This is actually good news. You have not succeeded in lying to yourself. The question now is whether you will tip toward despair (physical withdrawal from meaningful engagement) or toward revolt.
Revolt: Continue your work with full consciousness that it will not grant immortality. Show up tomorrow, not because success awaits, but because showing up is what you do. Your refusal to quit in the face of futility IS the revolt.
Freedom: You have been freed from the tyranny of "impact." You no longer need to measure each day against an impossible standard. What would you do with your work if you knew no one would remember? That work is now available to you.
Passion: Extract everything from the present moment. The texture of craft. The small problem solved well. The colleague you mentor. These were always available; you were too focused on the summit to notice the climb.
I think of Sisyphus at the foot of the mountain, the boulder having rolled down yet again. He knows it will always roll down. But watch him walk back down to begin again - that descent, that moment of consciousness, is his triumph. Your career has been your boulder. You will not reach the summit. The question is whether you can find happiness in the climb itself.
The struggle toward the heights - the struggle itself - is enough to fill a heart. Can you imagine yourself happy at the foot of your mountain?
