David Perell — POP Writing System

David Perell is "the writing guy on Twitter" (430k followers), founder of Write of Passage, and host of the How I Write podcast. His core thesis: the world doesn't reward the people with the best ideas — it rewards the people who are best at communicating ideas. His antidote to boring writing is POP: Personal (relate to the reader), Observational (teach the reader), Playful (entertain the reader), dialed up or down per audience on the Sizzle Spectrum, then compressed past "clear" into "memorable."

Quick Reference

• POP = Personal + Observational + Playful. Personal is how you relate, Observational is how you teach, Playful is how you entertain. All three, in any order, in every piece.
• Failure modes: only Personal = diary entry. Only Observational = lame scientific paper. Only Playful = tabloid. Missing one of three still leaks: no Observational = entertaining but not informative; no Playful = informative but not distinct; no Personal = no connection.
• The highlight test: mark Personal purple, Observational orange, Playful pink. Whatever color is missing is what the draft needs. Works on your writing and on writing you admire.
• Sizzle Spectrum: dial POP to the audience — the bachelor-party invite reads differently than the quarterly memo — but never drop playfulness to zero. Even serious topics can be communicated playfully.
• Clear then memorable: jargon ("Forsworn the protective Garb of sound financial Prudence") → clear (Howard Marks, 33 words) → memorable (Buffett, "you only find out who is swimming naked when the tide goes out"). Memorable is what gets repeated, and repetition is connection.
• Boredom is the enemy. People don't like reading; they'd rather scroll. Information is not enough — you also need connection.
• Not big words. "Countenanced" isn't pop. Playfulness is word choice, rhythm, and surprise — the paragraph is just as good without the SAT word.
