Why best: A literature review is not a summary of sources read — it is a synthesis that reveals a conversation among scholars and identifies where that conversation has a gap your research fills. The gap is the justification for the entire study. Without a clearly stated gap, reviewers ask "why was this research done?"
Steps
- Choose review type — systematic (exhaustive, reproducible search with explicit inclusion/exclusion criteria) vs. narrative (selective, thematic synthesis); choose systematic for clinical and empirical work, narrative for theoretical and humanities work
- Define the search strategy — identify databases, keywords, Boolean operators, date ranges, and language filters; document these for reproducibility; for systematic reviews, follow PRISMA flow diagram
- Screen and select sources — apply inclusion/exclusion criteria consistently; document the number of sources at each stage; use Rayyan or Covidence for systematic reviews
- Extract and organize by theme — group sources by argument, methodology, or finding, not by author or chronology; the structure reveals intellectual relationships
- Synthesize, do not summarize — for each theme, compare and contrast positions, note agreements and contradictions, and identify where evidence is weak or absent
- State the gap explicitly — after the synthesis, write one clear paragraph naming what the literature does not yet know or has not yet studied; this is the direct setup for your research question
- Transition to your study — the final paragraph of the review should state how your study addresses the gap; connect method choice to gap type
Rules
- Never write "Smith (2020) found X. Jones (2021) found Y." — always explain the relationship between findings
- Every claim must cite a source; even widely accepted facts require citation in academic writing
- Gaps must be argued, not asserted: show from the literature that the gap exists
- Do not include sources that do not contribute to the gap argument; length is not quality
Examples
Summary (wrong): "Chen et al. (2022) studied social media use in teens. Park et al. (2023) also studied this."
Synthesis (correct): "While Chen et al. (2022) and Park et al. (2023) both document negative associations between social media use and adolescent self-esteem, neither study controls for pre-existing depression — leaving open the question of whether social media causes harm or whether depressed adolescents seek social media as a coping mechanism."
Common Mistakes
- Annotated bibliography disguised as a review: listing sources without synthesis is not a literature review
- Gap stated without support from the literature: reviewers require evidence from prior authors acknowledging the gap
- Omitting contradictory evidence: cherry-picking weakens credibility and may constitute academic misconduct
When NOT to Use
- Do not apply this skill to a theoretical or conceptual paper that builds an argument from first principles rather than from accumulated empirical studies, where a formal literature review would misrepresent the work as empirically grounded when it is not.
- Do not use this skill when the literature in a field is so sparse (fewer than 10 relevant studies) that a structured synthesis cannot identify patterns, and an annotated bibliography with commentary is the more honest form.
- Do not apply this skill to grant proposals targeting funders who explicitly require a brief "background" paragraph rather than a full literature review, as exhaustive synthesis in that context signals unfamiliarity with the format and wastes the reviewers' time.
