Steps

1. Analyze the scene dramatically before planning shots

The shot plan serves the drama — plan the drama first:

• What is this scene's function in the story? (Setup, confrontation, revelation, resolution)
• What is each character's emotional state at the start, and how does it change?
• What is the scene's dramatic climax — the single moment of highest tension or change?
• What information must the audience receive? (Exposition, character revelation, plot point)

Mark the scene's key beats — the dramatic turning points that must be covered with a specific shot. These are non-negotiable coverage; everything else is secondary.

2. Define the coverage strategy

Coverage = the shots you capture to edit the scene in post. Three main approaches:

Classical Hollywood coverage:

• Master shot: wide shot of the entire scene from start to finish
• Coverage: medium shots, over-the-shoulder shots, close-ups of each character
• Pros: maximum editorial flexibility; safe against performance or pacing issues
• Cons: time-intensive to shoot; often produces middle-of-the-road results

Designed coverage:

• Director pre-plans the exact edit; shoots only what is needed to construct that specific cut
• Pros: efficient; highly visual results; forces directorial clarity
• Cons: less editorial flexibility; requires strong pre-visualization

Sequence shot (long take):

• A single, choreographed camera movement that covers the entire scene or a major portion
• Pros: continuous performance; often powerful; no cutaways needed
• Cons: requires perfect performance on every take; complex blocking and focus coordination

Choose the approach based on the scene's content, budget, and schedule. Most scenes use modified classical coverage with 3–5 designed specific shots.

3. Select shot sizes and angles for dramatic effect

Shot sizes and their narrative function:

• Wide/establishing shot (WS/ES): establishes geography, scale, situation; used at scene open and after major action
• Medium shot (MS): standard dialogue shot; shows relationship between characters
• Over-the-shoulder (OTS): positions viewer behind one character looking at the other; creates perspective and intimacy
• Close-up (CU): focuses on face or specific object; registers emotion; creates importance
• Extreme close-up (ECU): eyes, hands, objects of significance; maximum emphasis; used sparingly

4. Write the shot list

A shot list is a numbered table of every planned shot:

Number shots in a sequence that matches the scene's logical flow. Sequence the list to minimize lighting and camera setup changes (group all shots from one camera position before moving).

5. Translate to storyboard for complex scenes

A storyboard is a drawn sequence of panels showing what each shot looks like:

• Essential for complex action sequences, special effects, or stunts
• Useful for communicating with first-time collaborators or nervous financiers
• Not required for every scene — experienced directors and DPs work from shot lists alone

Storyboard panels: rough sketches showing: subject framing, dominant direction of action (arrows), approximate lighting

Production companies (Marvel, major studios): extensive pre-vis (pre-visualization, digital 3D previsualization) for all effects sequences.

6. Collaborate with the DP in pre-production

The shot breakdown is the basis for a prep conversation with the Director of Photography:

• Walk through the shot list together; DP identifies: lens choices, lighting implications, equipment needs (dolly? crane? Steadicam?)
• DP may suggest alternative approaches that achieve the same effect more efficiently
• Agree on color palette and visual style reference images for each scene

The shot breakdown is a starting point for collaboration, not a final unilateral directive. Great DPs contribute visual ideas that improve the plan.

Common Mistakes

• Shot breakdown without dramatic analysis: planning shots before understanding the scene's emotional beats produces technically correct but emotionally empty coverage.
• Over-shooting (too much coverage): capturing every conceivable angle creates vast amounts of footage, slows the shoot, and makes editorial decisions harder. Design coverage, don't accumulate it.
