Scroll Depth and Engagement Tracking
Track: scroll depth %, time-on-page, click events. Identifies what content engages vs what loses readers.
Tracking implementation
Google Tag Manager + GA4:
- Scroll Depth trigger (25%, 50%, 75%, 90%)
- Time-on-page event (after 30s, 60s, 90s)
- Outbound link clicks
- Internal link clicks
- Form interactions
- Video plays/completes
Engagement signals
- Average scroll: 50-70% (most readers reach midpoint)
- Average time: 1-3 minutes
- 80-90% scroll = engaged readers
- 0-25% scroll = bounced (improve hook)
- Spent time but no scroll = video/embed engagement
Acting on engagement data
If readers bounce in first 25%:
- Improve hook/headline
- Add visual interest in first 25%
- Shorten intro
If readers don't reach key CTA:
- Move CTA higher
- Add multiple CTAs at scroll milestones
- Make CTA more prominent
