Use the Constraint Chain
Turn background into play:
material condition → habitual response → institution or custom → visible sign → player choice → consequence
Example:
scarce dry grain → shared granaries → measured household obligations → sealed bins and public tallies → bargain, steal, contribute, or seek another source → status, hunger, debt, or conflict
This chain is more valuable than isolated trivia.
Start with Ordinary Competence
People who survive in the setting know routine work:
lighting and tending fires
drying clothing and bedding
loading animals
preserving food
maintaining tools
reading local weather
recognizing ordinary danger
Summarize competent routine. Focus detail when:
conditions are unusually bad
tools or materials are missing
time creates pressure
someone is inexperienced, injured, or deceiving others
failure changes a meaningful choice
Do not demand rolls for every fire, meal, repair, or mile.
Choose the Authenticity Dial
State the intended level:
Texture: one or two credible details; no new procedure.
Constraint: material reality changes available options or cost.
Procedure: repeated play needs a short rule or resource loop.
Campaign engine: logistics, law, trade, or season is central to the
supplement.
Use the lowest level that fulfills the design promise. A vignette usually needs
texture. A winter-expedition supplement may need a campaign engine.
Respect Setting Divergence
Ask:
How did ten generations of Blood Mist isolation alter trade, law, kinship,
roads, and authority?
How do non-human kin and long lives alter inheritance and memory?
Which crafts or institutions become possible because of magic?
Which magical practice is rare, costly, distrusted, or controlled?
How do monsters change land use, burial, herding, architecture, and taboo?
What knowledge survived locally but ceased to circulate?
Do not add banks, postal systems, police, standardized courts, mass literacy, or
industrial supply chains by habit. Do not forbid every organized institution
merely because the setting is harsh.
Write Lived Detail
Prefer details a person handles or notices:
damp wool steaming by the hearth
a cracked haft rebound with wet rawhide
grain measured before witnesses
a road remembered by drainage and grazing, not distance alone
a wound judged by heat, smell, swelling, and function
Use one exact detail that affects the scene. Avoid catalogs of research facts,
archaic vocabulary displays, and explanations that characters would not give
one another.
Model Institutions through Need
An institution exists because it coordinates something:
food storage
grazing and land use
defense
water
worship and burial
compensation and feud control
trade and measurement
care for dependents
seasonal labor
Show who contributes, who decides, who records or remembers, who benefits, and
who can be excluded. Every institution needs limits and an enforcement method.
Make Realism Playable
Good realism creates:
preparation choices
tradeoffs between speed, safety, warmth, secrecy, and load
bargaining over scarce labor or goods
obligations with several possible settlements
evidence players can interpret
consequences that follow from material causes
Bad realism creates:
repetitive maintenance rolls
unavoidable penalties without counterplay
specialist knowledge required from the player but not the character
permanent incapacity presented as routine fun
social restriction that removes character agency
“historical accuracy” used to excuse gratuitous cruelty
Handle Social Difference Carefully
Avoid a single universal “medieval society.” Customs vary by region, settlement,
kin, wealth, faith, ecology, and recent history.

show disagreement, evasion, bargaining, and change
preserve meaningful player choices
distinguish setting fact from one speaker's belief

Classify claims:
Manuscript fact: directly supported by current text.
Design inference: likely consequence of established setting conditions.
Authorial invention: new choice made for play.
Label inference and invention during design. In final prose, integrate them
naturally but do not present unsupported specifics as established canon.
For exact historical claims, contested customs, or technical craft procedures,
verify with reliable primary scholarship before making them load-bearing.
Authenticity Workflow
Name the scene or subsystem's practical question.
Set the authenticity dial.
Identify material conditions: season, tools, labor, time, transport, and
storage.
Identify social conditions: authority, obligation, custom, witnesses, and
enforcement.
Check setting divergences: Mist, magic, monsters, kin, and regional lore.
Choose one visible detail and one meaningful constraint.
Offer at least two credible responses.
Make consequences local and causal.
Remove trivia and bookkeeping that do not change play.
Run lore, design, and voice checks.

Could people sustain this food, labor, transport, or building practice?
Where do materials come from, and who controls them?
Who performs the work, how long does it take, and what displaces it?
