Rules

- Never skip taper — race-day performance depends on freshness; arriving well-trained but fatigued underperforms arriving slightly under-trained but fresh.
- Cross-training (cycling, swimming) during injury maintains aerobic base with reduced injury stress; do not force through pain.
Common Mistakes
- Too much moderate intensity — training exclusively at "comfortably hard" pace maximizes fatigue without maximizing either base or top-end development.
- Long runs too fast — elite runners do their easy runs at 65–70% of race pace; most recreational athletes run easy runs at 80–85% and accumulate excess fatigue.
- No periodization — running the same route at the same pace every week provides initial adaptation then plateaus; progressive overload and specificity require structured variation.
- Ignoring recovery runs — replacing recovery days with additional hard sessions prevents the parasympathetic nervous system recovery needed for adaptation.
When NOT to Use
- For athletes recovering from injury (use gradual return-to-sport protocol supervised by physiotherapist)
- For team sport athletes where endurance is secondary to speed and power (use sport-specific conditioning instead)
