Tool Design Principles

A good MCP tool:

1. Does ONE thing (not multiple tasks in one tool)
2. Has a clear, precise description (Claude uses this to decide when to call it)
3. Has a minimal, well-typed input schema
4. Returns structured, parseable output (not free-form text)
5. Handles errors gracefully — return error message, not exception
