Outcome-First Curriculum Design
Define course outcome FIRST. Then work backwards: what must learner know/do to reach outcome? Each module supports outcome.
Outcome-first process
- Define outcome — what changes for learner?
- Define mastery measure — how do we know they reached outcome?
- Decompose to skills/knowledge — what's required?
- Order by dependency — what builds on what?
- Module per skill area — structured learning units
- Assessment per module — verify mastery
- Capstone for outcome — culminating proof
Sample outcome statement
'Students will independently pre-grade 10 cards within 30 minutes with 80%+ accuracy compared to PSA results.'
Measurable, specific, actionable. Curriculum maps backwards from this outcome.
Common outcome mistakes
- Vague: 'Students will understand grading' (what does that mean?)
- Too broad: 'Students will master card collecting' (whole industry)
- Not measurable: 'Students will appreciate grading'
- Misaligned with content: outcome doesn't match what's taught
- Unachievable in time: 'Master grading in 1 hour'
