Uppercase and ALL CAPS Discipline
ALL CAPS is for short labels (1-3 words), not headlines. Letter-spacing 0.05-0.1em. Avoid for body text — reduces readability 20%.
Where ALL CAPS works
- Labels: 'NEW', 'BETA', 'LIVE'
- Section markers: 'INTRODUCTION', 'PART ONE'
- Nav items: 'TOOLS', 'PRICING' (with restraint)
- CTAs: 'BEGIN', 'CONTINUE' (with weight)
- Logo / wordmark
- Brand callouts: 'BUGATTI', 'X3 FLEET SAFETY'
Where ALL CAPS fails
- Headlines (>4 words)
- Body text
- Sentence-style sub-headers
- Tooltips, alerts
- Form labels (sentence case preferred)
ALL CAPS treatment
Always add:
- Letter-spacing 0.05-0.1em (caps need breathing)
- Slightly tighter line-height (1.1-1.2)
- Smaller size than sentence-case equivalent (caps appear visually larger)
- Same weight as paragraph context
Where this fits in the X3 empire
Used in CardPrepAI section markers, nav, brand callouts.
