Class 7 Radioactive Materials
Regulated by DOT (transport) + NRC (material).
Three categories
- Category I — White: lowest, no monitoring needed
- Category II — Yellow: moderate, driver dose monitoring required
- Category III — Yellow: highest non-HRCR
Highway-route-controlled (HRCR)
High-level: spent fuel, large casks. Pre-designated routes (49 CFR 397.101).
Carrier requirements
- Specialized training beyond HM-126
- Dose monitoring (TLD badges)
- Strict route planning
- NRC + state coordination
Packaging
Type A (low qty), Type B (high qty), Type C (air transport).
Reality
Most carriers will NEVER haul Class 7. Specialty market.
