Hazmat vehicles must be attended unless in 'safe haven' (49 CFR 397.5).
Driver must remain with vehicle when it contains hazmat.
When vehicle in 'safe haven' (locked secure facility, terminal yard, certain rest areas designated for hazmat), driver may leave.
More restrictive: cannot be unattended in residential areas. State + local ordinances vary.
Driver at restaurant 200 feet from truck — violation. Driver in sleeper berth, truck parked at non-designated rest area — varies by class.
