Hazmat carriers don't route freely. 49 CFR 397.101 + state-level rules + local ordinances restrict routes.
Class 7 radioactive (highway-route-controlled): pre-designated routes only. Class 1 (Division 1.1, 1.2, 1.3) explosives: state-designated preferred routes.
When practical, avoid heavily populated areas, places where crowds gather, tunnels, narrow streets. Federal default = avoid; states may have specific bans.
Many tunnels prohibit hazmat (e.g., Holland Tunnel NY, Boston tunnels, San Francisco-area tunnels). Some require placarded vehicle escort. State DOT maps publish restrictions.
Many states publish hazmat route maps. Examples: NJ, NY, IL, CA. Compliance required when shipping within or transiting these states.
Some metro areas prohibit hazmat during peak commute hours (e.g., NYC). Plan around restrictions.
When primary route unavailable (closure, weather), driver may deviate to safety + practical alternative. Document the deviation + reason.
Driver uses GPS that ignores hazmat routing. Truck uses prohibited tunnel. Class 7 not on highway-route-controlled route. Class 1 violations of state-designated route.
