Origin: Coined by Fortune journalist Carol J. Loomis in the 1980s. Loomis covered Buffett for decades and was his closest journalist friend. She first applied the term to describe the pilgrimage-like quality of Berkshire shareholders converging on Omaha each May.
The reference: Compares the annual gathering to the 1969 Woodstock music festival — not for the music, but for the sense of shared belief, community, and pilgrimage. Just as fans traveled to Bethel, New York for Woodstock, investors traveled to Omaha for the Berkshire meeting.

The humor: Buffett's opening remarks are often self-deprecating. He jokes about the board accidentally declaring a dividend ("I must have been in the restroom"), about See's selling out, about reading stock tables as a child. This informal tone sets the entire meeting's atmosphere.
The "Duracell Question": Shareholders frequently asked how long Berkshire would hold Duracell, given Buffett's stated view that Berkshire holds businesses "forever." Munger visibly sighed when this came up, once saying: "I hate the Duracell question." The tension between principle and practice was never fully resolved — and both men acknowledged it.

The 2008 Financial Crisis: At the 2009 meeting (held online in 2020 for COVID, but the 2009 meeting was in person), shareholders pressed Buffett on Berkshire's capital allocation during the crisis. Buffett had sold stock positions and taken capital preservation seriously — an unpopular move at the time but vindicated later.
"Berkshire is like a zoo" (Munger): Describing Berkshire's collection of disparate businesses as a zoo, with "some animals that escaped." Buffett laughed, acknowledged the image, but continued managing the zoo.

The Apple Question (2024): A 27-year-old shareholder from Malaysia asked why Berkshire sold Apple shares. Buffett explained Berkshire views stocks as businesses — and that Apple is an extraordinary business, but tax considerations and capital allocation judgment calls led to selling. He noted Berkshire paid $5 billion in federal income taxes and said: "I hope more companies join the 800 club."
International Questions: Becky Quick regularly introduces shareholders from China, India, Europe, and elsewhere. Buffett always emphasizes Berkshire's primary commitment to the United States while acknowledging global opportunities (Berkshire has significant positions in Japanese trading companies).
Munger's Death: Charlie Munger died November 28, 2023, at age 99 — just months before what would have been his final Berkshire meeting.
