Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett first met in 1959, when Munger was 35 and Buffett was 28. Their meeting was arranged by a mutual acquaintance in Omaha โ the city both men had deep roots in. Munger had grown up in Omaha; Buffett had built his early investment partnership there. The two were introduced over lunch at the Omaha Club.
Even before their first meeting, there was an indirect connection: as a teenager, Munger worked on Saturdays at Buffett & Son, the grocery store owned by Warren Buffett's grandfather, Ernest P. Munger had left Harvard Law School, graduated magna cum laude in 1948, joined a Los Angeles law firm, and by the late 1950s was restless. He described his drive as wanting independence, not luxury: "Not because I wanted Ferraris โ I wanted independence. I desperately wanted it. Buffett was already running his investment partnerships and had begun accumulating Berkshire Hathaway shares. When the two met in 1959, they discovered an immediate intellectual kinship.
Buffett's original investment philosophy came from his mentor Benjamin Graham, the "father of value investing." Graham's approach โ which Buffett called "Mr. Market" and "cigar butt" investing โ focused on buying companies at prices far below their net current assets, often "a cigar butt found on the street that had one last puff in it." Munger's influence became concrete with the 1972 acquisition of See's Candies. Buffett initially hesitated at the price. Munger pushed him to do it. The deal became the prototype for everything Berkshire would become: a brand with pricing power, emotional customer loyalty, and compounding returns.

From Los Angeles, Munger spoke frequently by phone with Buffett in Omaha. Even when they couldn't connect, Buffett claimed he knew what Munger would think. This telepathic shorthand โ developed over decades โ was the product of profound mutual understanding.
At Berkshire's 2010 shareholder meeting, Munger missed a special session. Buffett brought a cardboard cutout of Munger on stage and mimicked him saying: "I couldn't agree more."

Blue Chip Stamps was the crucial joint discovery. Blue Chip ran popular redemption stamp programs for grocers and retailers. Because stores paid for stamps upfront but prizes were redeemed much later, Blue Chip sat on a permanent float โ essentially a zero-cost source of investment capital, much like an insurance float.

Munger hosted his own legendary meetings at Wesco Financial in Pasadena, California (typically the Wednesday/Thursday after Berkshire's Omaha meeting). These were nearly as famous in investment circles as Berkshire's events.
He also hosted annual meetings of Daily Journal Corporation in Los Angeles, where crowds numbering in the hundreds gathered to hear him speak at length.
