The Tripwire is the economic hinge of a paid-traffic business. A well-designed tripwire liquidates ad cost within 24-72 hours of purchase (self-liquidating offer / SLO), buys infinite lead volume, and converts buyers up the ladder at 5-15% within 90 days. A poorly designed tripwire burns ad cost, attracts freebie-seekers instead of buyers, and blocks ascension to mid-ticket/high-ticket.
Why This Skill
Tripwire economics reshape a paid-traffic business:
Without tripwire: Cold traffic at $40 CPL -> 500 leads/month at $20K ad spend -> 2% conversion to core offer at $5K -> 10 sales at $50K revenue. Result: $30K/month net, limited by ad budget.
With tripwire at $47 + 30% buyer conversion + 8% ascension to core: 500 leads -> 150 tripwire buyers at $7,050 revenue (liquidates $6K of the $20K ad spend, netting ad cost to $14K effective) -> 12 core offer sales at $60K -> 2 high-ticket at $40K. Result: $93K/month net at $20K effective ad spend. 3x net revenue, same ad budget.

COGS per sale: cost to deliver (shipping + product + fulfillment + call time if applicable)
Contribution margin per sale: entry price - COGS
Conversion rate (cold traffic): % of ad clicks that buy tripwire
Cost per lead (CPL): ad spend / leads
Cost per tripwire sale (CPA): ad spend / tripwire buyers
Payback per lead: contribution margin × conversion rate = what the tripwire is worth per ad click
Breakeven CAC: max CPA at which tripwire is self-liquidating
Ascension rate to mid-ticket (60-90 days): % of tripwire buyers who buy next-tier offer
Ascension rate to high-ticket (90-180 days): % of tripwire buyers who buy core offer
Customer LTV at 90 days / 180 days: blended revenue per tripwire buyer
Self-Liquidating Offer (SLO) Math
A tripwire is self-liquidating when:
CPA <= Entry Price × (1 - COGS/Entry Price)

COGS: $2 (payment processing + email delivery)
Contribution margin: $45
Breakeven CAC: $45
If CPA <= $45 -> tripwire pays for itself, cold traffic is free

Tacit Principles
Tripwire is an economic instrument, not a product. Its job is to liquidate ad cost, build buyer list, install buying habit. Product utility is secondary.
Price is the buyer filter. $7 filters out obvious non-buyers. $47 filters out casual browsers. $97 filters out tire-kickers. Low price = poor filter.
Consume before pitching. Phase 2 (Days 1-3) is pure value. Pitching immediately = buyer feels baited.
Order bump > upsell when possible. Single-checkbox bump converts at 50-70% vs post-purchase upsell at 20-30%. Design the bump first.
Ascension economics matter more than tripwire economics. A tripwire that loses $5 per sale but ascends 20% to $2K core offer is vastly more profitable than a tripwire that makes $30 per sale but has zero ascension.
Refund rate is quality signal. Refund rate >10% = tripwire quality doesn't match price promise. Refund rate <3% = tripwire is doing its job.
The tripwire sells the mechanism. Within the tripwire content, the creator teaches a piece of the unique mechanism. Buyer becomes aware of the mechanism -> primed for ascension to the full offer that delivers the full mechanism.
Cold traffic pays for tripwires; warm traffic pays for core offers. Split ad accounts by funnel purpose.
The ascension sequence is the compounding asset. A well-built 90-day ascension sequence compounds tripwire LTV from $30 to $300+ per buyer. That's where the real margin lives.
