Jobs-to-be-Done (JTBD) Framework
People don't buy products — they hire them to do a job.
For any market, identify:
- Functional job: the practical task (e.g., 'get from A to B')
- Emotional job: how they want to feel (e.g., 'feel safe and in control')
- Social job: how they want to be seen (e.g., 'appear environmentally conscious')
Unmet job = opportunity. Over-served job = disruption from below opportunity.
SCAMPER Framework
Apply each lens to generate ideas:
- Substitute: what can be replaced in the current solution?
- Combine: what two things can be merged?
- Adapt: what can be copied or adapted from another industry?
- Modify/Magnify: what can be exaggerated or enhanced?
- Put to other uses: can the existing solution solve a different problem?
- Eliminate: what can be removed to simplify?
- Reverse/Rearrange: what if the process was reversed or reordered?

Blue Ocean Strategy
Eliminate-Reduce-Raise-Create grid:
- Eliminate: factors the industry takes for granted that can be removed
- Reduce: factors well below industry standard
- Raise: factors well above industry standard
- Create: factors never offered before in the industry
Blue ocean = high value + low cost by eliminating and reducing industry assumptions.
MVP Scoping
Core question: 'What is the smallest thing we can build to test the biggest assumption?'
- List top 10 features users want
- Identify which assumption each tests
- Rank assumptions by: if wrong, does the business fail? (most critical = test first)
- MVP = smallest feature set to test the top 2-3 assumptions
- Success metric: defined before building, not after
