| description | Use when optimizing for YouTube long-form. CTR (Click-Through Rate) + AVD (Average View Duration) determine ranking.
|
YouTube CTR and AVD
CTR = % impressions that click. AVD = average watch time. Both must be high; one without the other limits.
CTR optimization
Click-through rate optimization:
- Thumbnail — A/B test variations
- Title — clarity + curiosity
- First impression — what's promised
- Length — shorter often = higher CTR (impression context)
CTR targets:
- New channel: 3-5% acceptable
- Established channel: 6-10% strong
- Top performers: 10%+ exceptional
Low CTR (<2%) = need new thumbnail/title.
AVD optimization
Average View Duration optimization:
- Hook first 30 sec (avoid early drop-off)
- Pattern interrupts every 30-60 sec
- Content depth matches title promise
- Pace ahead of viewer attention (cut filler)
- End strong (encourage subscribe + next video)
AVD targets:
- 50% retention = average
- 60-70% = strong
- 70%+ = elite
Low AVD = content doesn't deliver.
Length strategy
Video length affects both:
- 60-second Shorts: target 100% retention
- 8-12 minute long-form: target 60%+ retention
- 15-25 minute long-form: target 50-55% retention
- 30-60 minute deep-dive: target 40-50% retention
Longer video, higher RPM (more ad slots), but lower retention.
