Hazmat pre-trip extends standard CMV pre-trip. Driver inspects placards, ID numbers, shipping papers, and emergency equipment.
All 49 CFR 392.7 + 396.13 checks: lights, brakes, tires, mirrors, horn, etc.
All 4 placards present, properly placed, current condition. Placard matches material in load. ID number on placard or panel matches shipping paper. Cargo properly secured. Vehicle marking + identification.
Paper present in cab. Paper within driver's reach (door pocket / clip). All required elements present (UN#, name, class, PG, quantity, ER number).
ERG in cab. Emergency response telephone clearly visible on paper. SDS attached if required.
Fire extinguisher (10 BC minimum for non-flammable; specific class for flammables). Spill cleanup kit (varies by material). Personal protective equipment (gloves, eye protection).
Driver should know: material classification, primary/secondary hazard, emergency response, route restrictions.
1 placard missing (driver forgot to install on a return trip). Wrong placard for material. ID number not displayed (bulk shipment). Fire extinguisher expired.
