# Strategic Retreat Decision Framework A decision-making process for balancing honor against tactical advantage in warfare. ## Overview When facing an enemy with whom you have a past agreement, use this framework to decide whether to advance or retreat. ## Decision Criteria ### Honor-Based Considerations - Past verbal agreements or promises made - Reputation for keeping one's word - Long-term trust with other states - Moral standing among allies ### Tactical Considerations - Current military position - Enemy strength and morale - Terrain advantages - Strategic objectives ## Decision Process 1. **Recall Past Agreements**: Review any promises made to the opposing party 2. **Assess Current Situation**: Evaluate military position and odds of victory 3. **Weigh Long-term Impact**: Consider reputation vs. immediate gain 4. **Make Decision**: - If agreement exists and honor is paramount → Retreat as promised - If no agreement or honor already compromised → Pursue tactical advantage 5. **Document Reasoning**: Record decision rationale for future reference ## Example Application When Duke Wen faced Chu forces, he retreated three stages (三舍) as promised during his exile, despite tactical advantage. This demonstrated honor and built long-term credibility. ## Expected Outcome A decision that balances immediate military needs with long-term reputation and alliance maintenance. ## Verification 1. Confirm that all past agreements with the opposing party have been reviewed and documented before making the advance/retreat decision. 2. Validate that the long-term reputational impact has been weighed against the immediate tactical gain. 3. Check that the decision rationale is recorded for future reference and alliance credibility.
